my mom used to tell about one of her early jobs, back in the 1930s. She was a waitress in a very nice downtown restaurant, and before starting their shift, all the waitresses had to line up for inspection by the manager. One of the rules was that the hems of their uniform dresses had to be the same distance from the floor, no matter how short or tall the waitress.

I thought these rules were for a nurse before I saw it was for White Castle!
