(The Boston Daily) After weeks of negotiations, the NFL Referees Association announced a tentative agreement with Bill Belichick and Tom Brady for the calling of penalties against the New England Patriots during the upcoming Superbowl.
Hailed as a major breakthrough by Patriots fans and players alike, the deal clarifies several key points of contention in advance of the big game.
Highlights include:
The penalty of Offensive Holding shall not apply during any play in which Brady has touched the ball;
Tight End Rob Gronkowski shall not execute concussion-inducing body slams more than 10 seconds after the play is dead. Breach of this rule shall incur a personal foul with a 15 yard penalty if the downed player loses consciousness for more than twenty minutes;
The air pressure of game balls shall be gauged at any time with consent of both participating teams;
At Brady's option, pass interference shall be declared following any incomplete pass thrown while an opposing player is within 10 yards of the intended receiver.
NFL Spokesman Art Semmel announced the agreement during a press conference held at The Brady Commemorative Shrine in downtown Boston exactly one week before kickoff. "The last thing fans want is uncertainty," said Semmel. "This agreement should answer any questions about transparency or bias."
Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson was not sought for comment.
