Shortly after the record's release, I heard Robert Lamm, the song's composer, interviewed on a radio show and he explained the lyrics as you noted. It's pretty funny how people can project their own ideas onto art!

Although this is favorite recording of this song, live version but no vid, from Paris - 1992 ... their best lineup, height of their powers ... this just kills ... really loud on headphones ...
