I don't remember my folks being much for Grand Ol' Opry, but I remember how she always started off.
I never understood the point of Judy Canova. But for some reason my dad, very repressed type, loved her show. Don't remember if tv or radio.
Each of these two have videos on youtube.

(16,865 posts)She was extremely influential in the creation of the Sarah Cannon Cancer Treatment and Research centers here in the Nashville area.
Also, one of my favorite songs by The Band Ophelia was written about her.
While she was Minnie Pearl, she insisted that the character live on after her death and she still appears on occasion at the Grand Ole Opry.

(22,264 posts)Seriously, in 1969 she was given an honorary doctorate from my alma mater, Kentucky Wesleyan College, and she was one of the speakers at our graduation. She was Sarah Ophelia Cannon that day, except for greeting us in her own delightful fashion.

(60,010 posts)But back in the mid/late 1950's, we were still listening to a.m. radio, so you got a marvelous mixture of music..Perry Como,
followed by a country song, followed by an early RR song, and then of course Elvis, which blew them all away.
My mother did not like Elvis, of course. She only knew him from the songs, and she thought he was black!
I can't and won't repeat what she said. But it was the transistor radio age, so I just ignored her and listened anyhow.

(12,858 posts)As a camp-counselor-in-training in 55 and 56, I was surprized that the campers all knew the Spin and Marty song.
Yr or so earlier everyone did Rock Around the Clock.
Freshman Week in college (Fall 57), the jukebox constantly played the Everly Brothers* singing Wake Up Little Suzie. Yr or so later my roommate's song was The Twelveth of Never.
* Later when I moved to IA, I learned the Everlys were from IA. In mid 70s, we rented a house in Nfld CA. My son, age 7, constantly listened to the Everly Bros album left in the house.
