Our sons math teacher is awesome

I just ran into her at the bakery she is a awesome educator. Both boys are thirteen and our one son came to us through foster program. And we’re in process of adopting, my point is at the beginning of seventh grade this year he was really struggling with math. And we sat down with his educators and came up with a plan. Two times a week he would meet with math teacher instead of study hall and be helped. This was at the beginning of the school year now were in third marking period and the young man has gone from a D to B.

Now this fine teacher gave up her own time where she could get work done on school time. And she tutored our son the offer was made she is even available on Saturday to tutor him if need be and we done this several Saturdays and we have worked with him . She would not accept any payments for Saturday tutoring and I offered. Anyway my wife and the boys their away for the weekend visiting her mom. And I walked to the bakery because they have great Ethiopian coffee and I ran into her. Out of gratitude I insisted this morning to let me take care of her bill 26$ for danish takeout is a good deal for a B in math is how I think.

And I also found out that both boys caught lunch detention Friday. As her and the other teacher we’re bus monitors that morning and the boys were calling each other curse or swear words in German. I said ok she said they were given letters for you to sign for three days lunch detention. Amazing how their mom and I have not seen those letters. After my coffee I’m going home and look through their backpacks. And if i find them I’ll text them a picture asking them to explain. Their taking German as a second language. And my German that I learned in army thirty years ago is starting to come back. So I’ll have to let mom know about this. These guys do make me smile because their tight.

They understand the long term impact that they have, both on getting the kids prepped for the next grade and exemplifying compassion, willingness to help, sacrifice, etc.

It is probably illegal for the teacher to take compensation for tutoring your kids. Maybe something can be worked out with another math tutor that does not directly instruct your boys?

I bet your boys would do better in a class with fewer students, but I know that is largely out of your control.

Educating others is not a money-making venture, they do it because they are "called". Like a doctor, pastor, police officer, more often than not, they are hard-wired to teach and educate.

That is where pure capitalism fails---there is no value that can be put on the visceral driving force that makes people choose a particular profession. Those people don't do it for the money and are easily exploited by pure capitalists.

Your sons' math teacher is one of those special people.
