(2,272 posts)Sam was very funny. He was, but I recently watched one of his stand up routines again and was extremely dismayed at what I saw. Yes, his routine about religion was hilarious (and truthfully its the one I mainly remember), but then he went on a homophobic rant/routine that just left me agog at the insensitivity and just plain hate that left me shaking my head. I deleted my copy of that night's stand up and very seriously doubt I'll ever watch him again. Very saddened and disappointed by what I saw and heard.

(27,849 posts)He played Professor Terguson:
"You remember that thing we had about 30 years ago called the Korean Conflict?
And how we failed to achieve victory?
How come we didn't cross the 38th parallel and push those rice-eaters back to the Great Wall of China? [rips a desk apart] Then take the fucking wall apart brick by brick and nuke them back into the fucking stone age forever?!
Tell me why!
How come?!
Say it!
Say it!"

(14,565 posts)Saw him in town all the time in Las Vegas, mostly near the Sands. He always had dismissive body language as if he were so far superior to the people walking nearby who recognized him and said something to him. Not once did I see him give any type of decent courteous response.

(24,319 posts)He said a lot of annoying things and insulted groups of people, but I saw it in the context of playing a character.
I saw him live once in a theater in the round in San Carlos, CA. I'll tell you this, a few people found out that night that it was not a good idea to heckle him.

(54,065 posts)I don't expect perfect politics from my comedians. And I'm usually turned off by abrasive and abusive personalities. But somehow he made it work. You can see the inside pain more than the hurtfulness he was mimicking

(26,584 posts)Although funny he like Pryor, Bruce, Carlin, et al could and did make many uncomfortable.
