chimney at some point if it is an older house... Obviously they don't get rid of tree branches, bird's nests or other fire hazards within the chimney nor tell you if you have a dangerous crack or other issue.

I think you are supposed to use them every 50-60 wood fires. I have gas now, so no longer using.

I also know people that have burned old creosote-soaked telephone poles, that's why I asked for clarification.

Burning them in other parts of the house is not a good idea.

I have sold a LOT of these...how you use them is to get your chimney cleaned before the fireplace season starts, then burn one Creosote Sweeping Log a month during fireplace season as a preventive maintenance measure.
