I have been thinking about getting a dog for a long time. I used to own Doberman Pinschers but I would rather get a more placid dog this time out. I have read a lot about the Newfoundland dog and I think it is the dog for me but I am wondering how others have felt about owning one.
I think my biggest worry is the lifespan issue. I would hate to get attached to a dog and not have much time with it. How often do Newfies live to be 10 years old? I see different estimates for age but most of them say 8-10 years.

She lived to be 11 years old.
She was sweet and beautiful !!!
She rarely barked.
They do not make good guard dogs.
They would open the door and let strangers in, if they could.
My vet told me she was a bit unusual, because she was very active.
They are usually coach potatoes.

(1,965 posts)Larger dogs tend to live shorter lives. A good friend had a Newfoundland, years ago. A really sweet, mellow dog. Sadly, he only lived 6 years. Jerry was devastated. When he felt the time was right, he got a small dog, which he had for 14-15 years. He always wanted another Newfoundland but wouldn't risk the potential heart break of losing another one too soon. To this day, he says "Panama", the Newfie, was the best friend he ever had.
