Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsWtf happened to netflix - Im back on after 10 mo. hiatus and I find that
there is NOTHING, but nothing, that I want to watch. I do see some things that I watched and enjoyed year or 2 ago, but nothing new. Just mile after mile of various grisly, grotesque, dark, crime ridden, murderous, demonic, evill, monstrous grade Z flicks that Ive never heard of before.
I do not mind darkness or crime or gore in my TV &movies, but it has to be done reasonably well done and be in context of a satisfying storyline - Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, The Wire are some of my all time faves.
Any suggestions before I pull the plug on my membership?
Or is there a way you can get the DVD membership but without the "basic" streaming membership which Im finding utterly useless?
thx!
EDTA - Just found season 3 of Schitt's Creek - all righty! Thats more like it - let the binging commence.

I heard "Oop-helly-ah" about 8 times before I figured out what the hell they were talking about!
Many other pronunciations and expressions are just funny or charming, but it was quite an exercise in alternative English!

(12,162 posts)Jeff Daniels was riveting as Frank Griffin. Many interesting characters and plot threads. Yes, it's a violent story, but there's a lot of space given to character development, and surprising tenderness in a bleak and unforgiving territory.
True Dough
(17,314 posts)What I appreciated about the character of Frank Griffin, in addition to Daniels' superb acting, was that he wasn't one-dimensional. He was a monster, but one who showed moments of sympathy among his many acts of cruelty.

(1,752 posts)music so abruptly in midsentence. Youre enjoying music and the visuals then sudden its chopped off to show some guy talking. Very jarring. More than once Ive screamed and thrown things at the TV. Youd think a fancy-pants director like Socrcese c ould have done a better job weaving the music + interviews together.

(17,340 posts)Also search for 'Rake' - starring Richard Roxburgh - Australian, well written, high production values, great performances.
It's funny and moving. https://www.netflix.com/title/70301553
You might also want to check out The Big Family Cooking Showdown - absolutely fun and although one of the female hosts is intensely annoying in a distinctly English way, a really good show with some great dishes.

And a really good crime drama - Broadchurch - https://www.netflix.com/title/70302484
And I just started watching 'The Windsors' - send up of the Royals. The bit where Camilla decides to get pregnant is amazingly dark and funny - https://www.netflix.com/title/80216651

(7,911 posts)I had a list of things I'd like to watch before I signed up, but not one single thing on my list was available on Netflix streaming.
Here's what I considered: I'd buy the movie I'd like to watch, used on Amazon. Then if I really like it I'd keep it. If It's not worth keeping, I'd list it for sale on Amazon and make back what I paid for it. That means I'd get to watch the movie for free. (The Amazon shipping allowance is way too much for what it costs to slip the dvd into an envelope and send it first class, so the rest is profit.) I have sold books on Amazon, but I haven't tried this yet. It's probably not worth the trouble, but it probably could be done. hehe

(5,260 posts)I'm on DVD disc only. Over the years my queue had grown to 211. So in preperation to dumping Netflix and watching DVD's from the public library and those I own, I started winnowing the queue using Roger Ebert's review site and IMDB. Down to around 40, I began receiving better films again. So I'll stick with it a while longer.

(1,752 posts)European flix re: WW2, nazis, etc. SOME REALLY GOOD STUFF - there is a frankness now that didnt used to exist in the overly-heroic WW2 movies of the past - eg how everyday citizens were complicit and enabled nazism to happen - that sort of thing. Very timely. And now they are so much more emotionally honest to the point of being devastating - eg the BBC version of Anne Franke - so much better and intense than that 1950s version (that portrayed her as kind of a ditz.)
So yeah Im up for Nazis.

(29,218 posts)mostly a bunch of drek... Soap operas with everyone constantly sacrificing themselves for their friends (and lovers) only to be resurrected (somehow) in the next episode (doubles from other dimensions or fairy tale lands, etc)
I liked Ozark (sort of like Breaking Bad).
I liked Stranger Things (Goonies mixed with X Files)
Didn't care at all for The Magicians (shameless ripoff of Narnia)
Will try some of the other shows on your list
Nictuku
(3,616 posts)I was a huge CS Lewis (Narnia) fan, as well as Lord of the Rings, and the reason I kind of liked The Magicians was the obvious tongue-in-cheek ripoff of some of those tales, (and the nerds that knew the story lines like the back of their hands), it kind of endeared the The Magicians to me a bit.

(29,218 posts)Storylines were confused.. and the TV show cast people that looked too similar and then had them weave in and out of similar stories.
Not to mention that everytime a "main evil" character is defeated, a new one appears who is more powerful.

(15,805 posts)to suss out thousands of hidden films and TV shows. Netflix, like Amazon, uses complex, personalized algorithms to show you titles based on your viewing habits, and with all the subgenres could number in the tens of thousands, but you generally only see the most popular. Netflix categorizes titles by numbered subgenres, but not all numbers will have entries as their algorithms are always in flux and titles are constantly added and removed.
I use a website, Netflix Secret Categories, that displays clickable links that will redirect you to the various categories on Netflix. You can also add the specific subgenre code directly to the end of the Netflix URL. The link below explains how to do that and also lists the codes for the main genres:

(2,956 posts)I am currently watching Netflix original "La Mante". PREMISE: In Paris, police search for a psychopath whose murders are inspired by Jeanne Deber, known as "The Mantis", a famous serial killer who terrorized the country 20 years ago. Believing it takes one to know one, the police ask Jeanne Deber to help hunt the copycat. Placed in solitary confinement since her arrest, "The Mantis" agrees on one condition: to deal only with Detective Damien Carrot, her estranged son. Damien has no choice, for a serial killer is on the loose and could strike anytime, anywhere in Paris.
The Dutch & Scandinavian series are very well produced.
I also have a subscription to MHZ Choice. All are foreign, sub-titled, but the availability is endless. It's 7.99 per month. I find I watch it more than Netflix.

(7,530 posts)That's why the streaming catalog does not match the DVD mailer catalog one-to-one. Some things are available to both stream and rent through the mail, but not everything. Some properties are DVD only, some are streaming only.
Netflix has to pay for rights to rent physical DVDs and that's one contract. Streaming rights are another contract. New properties might be too costly to license for streaming rights when they first come out. Also, streaming rights are sometimes exclusive to one service or the other, or might be concurrent. Right now, I can rent the HBO property Westworld on DVD via Netflix, but I cannot stream it because HBO has their own paid streaming service and they want to keep "on demand" viewing of that show exclusive. But they will sell rental DVDs to Netflix. That's also why Netflix will "lose" certain movies and shows, seemingly on a schedule; the license contract will expire, and Netflix will choose not to renew it, or the content owners may choose not to renew with Netflix because they want to sell rights to a different venue.

(38,322 posts)As others have mentioned, the Netflix browser defaults to showing television series and movies that are popular on Netflix, apparently a disproportionate amount of horror stuff. It doesn't show everything they have.
The Netflix browser gets a little better (and a little scarier in an Orwellian sense) when it has a history of your viewing habits and ratings.
I hate blood and guts horror movies. I dislike "gritty" legal dramas, police dramas, medical dramas, and mysteries. Have seen more than enough of that shit in real life, thank you.
My favorite movies are what Netflix sometimes calls "quirky;" low and medium budget films and television series from all over the world. I don't mind subtitles. I also watch English language movies with the subtitles on and the volume turned low.

(1,752 posts)Did all 13 eps in 24 hours! Not such a huge accomplishment though when you consider each ep is only 20 mins.
This continues to be a highly enjoyable show - and I say this as someone who usually detests sitcoms. From Gilligans Island up on through Friends and on up to whatever is on now (I dont have a real tv so I dont know) Ive never been able to tolerate the cartoonishness of the characters or the dumbass plots where theyre continually trying to manipulate or deceive each other. I think the secret of this show is they turn all the sitcom conventions sideways. Ex: Johnny (Eugene Levy character) trying to manipulate the golf course owners into giving him a free round of golf. When later Stevie gets this to happen, and Johny asks how she did it, she says "I just asked." Which really is a lot funnier than it might sound - but then I always liked my humor dry and understated, and/or character-driven.
Besides the hysterically funny and absurd scenes (David working on the Amish farm still makes me LOL) there is enough complexity and depth to the characters where you can have moments that are genuinely moving = spoiler alert next paragraph - stop now if you must.
(spoiler alert - the last scene w/ David's new business partner is just plain sweet and funny- and not like anything Ive seen in the whole body of gay TV characters - not that Im any kind of expert. Um correction - I think we established last 2 season that David is metro nonbinary bisexual LOL )

(63,219 posts)I'm annoyed at how limited their selection really is, when you get right down to it.
I like a lot of their original programming, and they do nab some great tv shows, but their movies are hit or miss. For every film that I want to see, there are like 700,000 that I wouldn't watch if you paid me.
At times it's hard to avoid feeling like you've been baited-and-switched...
