Murphy's law, that is.
I had to run down to Spain yesterday for what was SUPPOSED to be a slow leisurely day of work and visiting with some Catalan friends (just Barcelona yesterday, not Madrid this time). The 6:45 AM plane would have gotten me in at 9, in the city by 9:30. The plane back to Düsseldorf was at 7:30 PM, so I would have been home by 10:15 at the latest.
So, I got up at 4:30, was through security by 6:20, in the plane by 6:40. We sat there, hearing weird noises from the rear of the plane. The pilot said there were a few minor technical issues to resolve, and we would be underway in 10 minutes. After an hour, the new assessment was that the plane couldn't fly at all. Busses were sent to take us back to the terminal. There was a 2 hour wait to even see the ticket counter. The line went all the way to the other end of the airport, since Sunday's blizzard had canceled all air traffic in and out of Düsseldorf. The airline (Eurowings, a Lufthansa excuse to charge the old prices for less service) gave us meal vouchers for 7.50 with the wrong date stamped on them so that none of the airport concessions would accept them. They said a new plane would be sent up from Köln (Cologne) to take us to Barcelona. It finally arrived, they loaded on the luggage again, then had to de-ice the plane. We finally landed around 2:30 PM instead of the planned 9:00 AM. At that hour, there was little traffic, so I made it into central Barcelona by 3. It usually takes twice as long.
My plane back was not (yet) showing a delay. I got to my first appointment, who said, we waited all day for you, now it is time for lunch! I had no choice, joined them at a nearby restaurant, gulped down a quick salad and an undercooked piece of grilled chicken with a few overcooked fries. We went back to the office, rushed through the work, and I grabbed a taxi to my next appointment, rushed through that, too, and grabbed another taxi back to the airport. The 7:30 flight still showed on time. It was a little after 6:15. By the time I got through security, it was showing delayed to 8:20. We finally took off at around 10, and I walked trough the door at half past midnight.
One of those perfect Murphy's Law days. Hasa Diga Eebowai.

(205,405 posts)You must be exhausted... physically and emotionally. If it makes you feel any better, things aren't going all that well in this part of the world - here in New York the news is all about the blizzard that started overnight and is supposed to last for most of the day. I'm watching the list of today's closings as I type this. But it was broken up by a commercial urging everyone to tell our Trump-supporting RW representative to vote for "tax reform..."
All I can say is that at least we're not in Alabama. They aren't facing a great day, either. Hang in there - and get some well earned rest - you deserve it.

(16,903 posts)granddaughter). We were flying United. On a Saturday at midnight, going back home to Saint Augustine, FL.
We did not get to St Aug until Monday morning. Stayed overnight in a Hyatt airport hotel in DC. Wont be flying the friendly skies ever again.

We had flown into Washington-Dulles from Europe, had 3 hours to connect to Charleston, SC on United. AT first, United told us there was a technical problem that had to be fixed. Then they told us the flight was canceled and all other flights to Charleston were full. They said that if we wanted, we could fly to Columbia, SC. I said that was OK if they would transfer our luggage to the same plane. They said there was plenty of time to do that. We arrived in Columbia at 11:00 PM. Our luggage had vanished into thin air, and United had no more personnel at the Columbia airport. We took a $250 taxi to Charleston, couldn't find out anything about our luggage from United. The next morning, I took a taxi out to Charleston airport (another $35 gone), found our luggage just sitting out front for anyone to cart off that wanted to. We don't have high-priced suitcases, so no one had bothered to run off with them (yet). I loaded them all back into another $35 taxi back to the city where we were staying. That cost me about $350 in extra costs, to which United said get lost.

We were booked on United from Newark to Portland, Maine for the christening of a ship named after the father of a friend of ours. It was a Friday afternoon, and the ceremony was on Saturday in Bath, Maine, a little over a half hour north of the Portland airport. At around 11:00 AM, my travel agent called from Texas (not a peep from United) to say that United had canceled our flight. End of story. United couldn't be bothered to tell us. I asked about flights to anywhere else in the area. Boston, Manchester, Bangor, Bar Harbor, Keene, ANYWHERE. All full. So, we had to rent a car in Manhattan and drive through the pouring rain the nine hours to Portland, Maine's airport, where our original car rental was waiting for us.
Never EVER again with United.
