The personal pronoun "them" can reference a singular individual when gender is unknown or otherwise not being given, in addition to referring to more than one person. The poster's reaction to your post was likely a matter of misunderstanding of your intent.

If gender is unknown or they're a trans person them/they/their is correct. My son's boyfriend is trans and I know this.

yesterday. I wish I knew what has happened to her. She was a voice of reason and I miss her.
