Tonight I grieve my old friend

We euthanized her today after 13 years. The arthritis was just too bad and the adequan no longer worked.

Tomorrow I am going to remember our hunts, her antics, and the joy the best dog I have ever owned brought me.

But tonight, I shall grieve.

is that we live so much longer than they do.

They become part of our lives, part of us. Just as with people we love, we don't ever want to lose them. Alas, we do.

I'm a cat person myself, and I've been through this process myself. Personally, I like to think we will eventually be reunited with these wonderful friends.

our almost 15-year old mutt I got from the humane society as a pup. So, I feel your pain and send you hugs.

Coda grew up with Howdy, our Border Collie who died peacefully in his sleep at 17 last year, and our daughter. They all raised eachother. There was so much chaos around here then...lively, funny, noisy, sometimes exasperating. I should have stopped more often to appreciate it, and realize it would not last forever.

Our daughter is now 24 and out on her own. Both childhood pups now gone. It feels like a real turning of the page. They take a piece of our heart with them.

Will you get another some day?

With a spinal fusion and severe arthritis in my knee. I cannot train them like I used to. Maybe I would consider adopting an older dog in need of a place to live out their last year's. It would be unfair of me to get a pup from working dogs and not be able to work it.

I have complete empathy and have tears in my eyes as I write this. My "new" little girl is 14 1/2 and I cherish every minute and dread the future without her. I am going to die in a few years and feel OK about it since I won't have to suffer as I did before. I think the timing is "fate" and "meant to be".

I have Murphy's ashes beside me as I post. Lost him 3 years ago after 15 years of slobber and tail wags. Gotta tell ya what happened though.

We had some special food for Murphy, and had some left after Murphy went to that big hunting ground in the sky. I took the food to the Humane Society and donated it. While I was there I decided to look at the doggies they had, but with no intention of taking one home. Pain was still pretty high from losing Murphy.

Well, then I saw Joey the Jack Russell terrier, and he saw me. That's when the rescue started, that is, when Joey began to rescue me. He was ten years old, had been there a week, and came from a loving home of a person who couldn't keep him for medical reasons.

You can guess how this turned out. Joey is at my feet now, giving me the best look he can come up with that tells me he deserves a treat. I'll give him one in Bibi's honor.

Thanks for sharing your journey. You are seeing a lot of doggie people posting here.

A new pup we called Bear, cause he had big brown eyes, got sick...not sure what happened, but we think he ate concrete?

He was so very cute, he would look at me and cut his eyes to half moon eyes..I fell in love with that 'Bear'

When I took him to the vet, he said he had some sort of mass in his chest. I called my best friend and said I was going to get a Christmas bonus so I could have the operation (70/30 he would die) and my friend said I should not spend all my money on a lost cause.

I did not save his life, but I love that puppy to this day.

She loved to ride in the car, so I spent 20 hours driving her around, but she just laid in the back seat...I probably cried for 100 miles or more.

Took her to the vet and I held her as she died...only my fathers death was equal to how I felt the death of my poochy

About four months later, we brought home a new puppy. He'll never "replace" our first dog, but he lifted all our spirits in his own way. So I hope you are in a position to consider getting a new dog, too. Dogs are wonderful healers.

They don't know what's wrong with him. He's 11. So I wouldn't be surprised if this is the end. So I can especially feel for you. I lost a dog once and was crushed by it, even though I knew it was coming for 2 years.

Did you keep the ashes or anything? Bury him locally?

A dog on her master...

As young as I look,
I am growing older faster than he,
seven to one
is the ratio they tend to say.

Whatever the number,
I will pass him one day
and take the lead
the way I do on our walks in the woods.

And if this ever happens
to cross his mind,
it would be the sweetest
shadow I have ever cast on snow or grass.

If it should be I grow frail and weak
And pain prevents my peaceful sleep
Then you must do what must be done
When this last battle can't be won.
You will be sad, I understand
Selfishness must stay your hand.
But on this day, more than the rest
Your love and friendship take the test.
We've had so many happy years
That what's to come can hold no fears.
You'd not want me to suffer so
When the time comes, please let me go.
Take me where my needs they'll tend
Only, stay with me until the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time, you too will see
It is a kindness that you do for me.
Although my tail it's last has waved
From pain and suffering I've been saved.
Do not grieve, it should be you
Who must decide this thing to do.
We've been so close, we two, these years
Don't let your heart hold any tears.
