However, he did not care for the ending, which he thought was misogynist and not his intent.

If you're familiar with Harlan Ellison, that's still a pretty good endorsement. He generally absolutely loathes any adaptations of his work.

The movie does have its own charms, particularly the fleshed-out world of the subterraneans and their bizarre culture based on the rural 1950s.

OK ... Dorothy is a girl, but so what.

Dorothy loves Toto. Toto gets in trouble. Evil lady takes Toto. Toto escapes. They run away. Get lost in OZ ... wild adventures follow.

And at the end, they return home safe and sound. Ok, they are still stuck in Kansas, but they survive.
