Minus a few of the details that make it more of a parable than the amusing anecdote it may have started as.
(His story starts at 2:40)

Although, now that I look it up, snopes has the story documented before Douglas Adams claims it happened to him. Though it certainly could have, it looks like the origins of stories like this date back earlier.
