Eureka is nicknamed The Friendliest Town on the Loneliest Road in America. With that kind of reputation, how could we not visit? This would also be the 3rd stamp in our Hwy 50 book. Only 5 more to go!RKP5637

(8,632 posts)If you're heading there from San Francisco, I definitely recommend visiting Virginia City just outside of Reno. It's a great Old West silver mining town that we'll be sharing some videos of soon. We did that at the end of our Highway 50 trip, but it's a great way to start it too!

(3,064 posts)From there its a short hop on I 80 to Reno. Over 20 years ago. Its quite beautiful. So expansive. Hundreds of miles of the Great Basin.
It was called The Loneliest Road in America then and the 450 mile stretch from Delta to Fernley couldnt have changed much. Few towns, none of any size , and expanses of desert valleys seen from mountain ranges.
Its a special part of our country.

(8,632 posts)We did love all the small towns with their history proudly on display. And yes, the Great Basin has such a beautiful landscape! The Loneliest Road in America really is a national treasure.

(8,632 posts)We thought it was a very well preserved Old West town. It's been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1973.
