I realize his music is not for everyone, I think he is one of the most brilliant composers and artists of our time. One of my favorites is the music from "Candyman", this main title sequence reminds me of the main title sequence to "North by Northwest". Hitchcockian in its deliverance. Any Philip Glass fans out there and what are some of your favorites?

(4,138 posts)He already had a following in the NYC avant-garde in the early 70s, but his first opera "Einstein on the Beach" was a huge success. (critically anyway, they actually lost money putting it on despite selling out all their shows). But Einstein was very idiosyncratic and weird, so his next two operas were showing that he could work within a more traditional operatic context. By then, he was famous and influential. Since then, he's probably done a dozen or more operas, although a bunch of them are closer to the avant-garde theater end of the spectrum than the classical opera tradition side.

This is my favorite section of the opera. Even among Glass's output, there's really nothing like it. His "Music in 12 Parts" has a lot in common with it musically, but it's a concert piece, not a staged work.

(40,416 posts)It was a Met broadcast. I had heard parts of it before, but a complete performance was astounding.
From Act III, Evening Song:
It is a very powerful opera. Ghandi and MLK Jr.
Also, there's Koyaanisqatsi:

(40,416 posts)No cable TV. No broadband INet. Barely able to get cellular. The only INet available here other than dial-up. (Yes, really!)
I am about to replace my roof TV antenna and rotor so that I can restore broadcast TV. My 40 year old antenna ain't doing it, and the old rotor no longer works.
BTW, I just had my septic tank pumped out Monday. I heat with heating oil (diesel fuel without the road taxes) delivered by a big truck. Still damned expensive here in rural west Michigan where winters can get very bitter. My water comes from an Artesian well -- which is good, best morning coffee on the planet. Percolated, of course.
When we have a power failure, not uncommon here, I lose everything. Not even a flush toilet.
You are definitely roughing it! I dont have cable, I have cellular, I feel for you, what is rural West Michigan? I spent the last 20 years in Colorado and moved back to Michigan, this is my birth place. Michigan is an expensive place to live. I was born in Pontiac, grew up in the Waterford, Union Lake area, eventually moving on to Grand Blanc and Flint. Been all over the state.

(40,416 posts)I won't reveal my location much further here. Sorry.
I'll just say that it is in rural west Michigan. Hint: there are likely more white tail deer than humans in my county.
There are very few paved roads here. VERY FEW! I laugh in the face of people who say that there's going to be driverless cars anytime soon. In winter. On narrow, curvy, unpaved country roads! They'll all end up in Grass Lake here. Plus, many named communities here are unincorporated. So tell your GPS system to take you to Bitely. You'll probably end up at the bottom of Nichols Lake. Too bad. The Bitely Tavern has great burgers and shuffleboard. And cold beer.

All kidding aside, I like his music. Satyagraha is amazing.
