My parents house used to get hundreds of kids a year. They had to buy 9-10 bags of candy. Over the last few years, they've gotten 0. They stopped buying candy completely.

and a little chocolate covered mint pressed into the top of the marshmallow. A little homemade candy treat.

Every year for about 5+ years I couldn't wait to get back to her house down the street for that special treat. That's 60+ years ago and I remember that Halloween treat every year like it was yesterday.

I don't think folks make homemade Halloween treats anymore, since some genius invented putting razor blades in apples one year way back when.

The first year I moved to the town, I didn't know the local customs in regards to Trick or Treating. Halloween day I was working late and stopped at a store on the way home and spent a lot on candy. Got home about 7:30 and not one trick or treater showed up. Found out from my neighbor the next day that trick or treating was done between 4 and 6 pm, that a house with a porch or entry light on was a signal to trick or treaters that there was candy there and that very, very few kids came to the part of the town where I lived because it was mostly old people who didn't give out candy that lived there.

I was eating candy all the way to Christmas that year.

I've noticed fewer and fewer, every year. Last year it rained, and I still had more kids than this year. I think more and more are going to those parking lot 'Trunk or Treat' parties.

It's pretty cool here and it is a school night. I'm probably average four door bells an hour. Still a lot of candy left although my porch light is still on and it's only a little after 7:00 here.

This started 2 years ago.
Didn't hear about it the first year - we had @30 at our house.
Last year we had maybe 10.

This year I went to the trail. Gave out @ 300 pieces in half an hour and was wiped out.
I am willing to change my ways. Treating is done in the light so it is easy to see the costumes and recognize people. So next year I will go fully prepared.

Go with the changes, I guess.

Seemed less than last year. They started around 6 and came in groups until 7:30 or 7:45. My policy is to close down at 8 or when the candy runs out .. whichever comes first. We had one kid at 7:59. Then I turned off the decorative string of pumpkin lights, the lighted pumpkin and the porch light. Closed the door. I have noticed in past years the only kids after 8 were high school kids, far too old to be trick or treating. Most were rude and pushed and shoved like the heathens they were. LOL. So that is when I decided 8 p.m. was about right. Two hours from 6 - 8 is long enough.

I bought 6+ lb. of Kids Mix candy. Tootsie Rolls, Tootsie Pops, DOTS and flavored taffy. We still have probably half that bag so I will give it to my grandkids when we see them at Thanksgiving. If there is any left...heh, heh, heh...

the last halloween i was at my house (2015) i had about 150 kids
for the last two or three halloweens i was there a couple neighbors moved my little fire pit in the front yard when it got dark out and we were making smores for the parents and kids (along with dropping candy into the trick or treat bags). i had warm apple cider on the stove and would bring out trays with cups of cider for the neighborhood.
there were years of simply magical halloween afternoons and evenings
then i moved to condo land
0 trick or treaters--and i used to love answering the door, giving away candy, etc.
usually this neighborhood has kids floating around, playing after school, people out walking but today when i took my dog out (after school hours) it was like a freakin ghost town
very lonely halloween compared to what i'm used to.
i stopped across the hall and visited with the neighbors for awhile.

of Utz pretzels. I expected to be derided for the pretzels, but many kids seemed happy about them.

One little girl told me she watched a youtube video on how to get more candy on Halloween, but wouldn't give me any details because her brother was listening.

Didn't have to open the emergency bag of Reeses peanut butter cups, so win win for me.

She lives in an upper scale neighborhood who have a lot of children living in it and of course the neighborhoods near by came also. The last few years I have been volunteering at a haunted house that uses the money for donating to some charity ( can not remember which one this year ) but it is fun. I was a screamer this year and made one teenage girl pee herself.

I don't know what's changed, but there are fewer every year. I remember one year I actually ran out of candy, had to jump in my car and drive ten minutes to my mother's since she was closer than the store. So now each kid gets a handful since there are so few. We had KitKats, too...
