(9,275 posts)My kids wanted the sour patch kids, laffy taffy, Swedish fish, etc. Mom stole much of the chocolate. However my granddaughter is a chocoholic like me, good kid.

(18,497 posts)That happy jackpot smile on their face.
I have a couple big bags of mini chocolates.
I have an assortment of favor type toys too.
I bought maybe 50 adorable little rubber duckies dressed for Halloween.
But they "Don't Float."
Well they sorta float.
Face down.
Don't want kids to be disappointed so I will probably pass those out at work.

(15,696 posts)36 to a case. We just buy cases starting in September when we shop for groceries.
We never realized we were "the legend" of Halloween memories.

(50,566 posts)"Sorry kids, we're kind of...well...OUT of candy. Here's a Chick Tract, a toothbrush, and a picture of the axe murderer who will deal with your little asses if you come back with eggs and rolls of toilet paper."
displacedtexan
(15,696 posts)It's not. We run out at 8:30 or 9:00pm; no Chick Tracts are allowed anywhere near our home; and we don't threaten children.
I hope Halloween at your house is fun.

(37,372 posts)I had a monitor with a picture of a pumpkin with "IMPEACH" in the window. When the bell rang, I would open the door, present the bowl, and say, "Take Five!" The kids would say, "This is the best House!"
I would walk to the end of the drive and talk with the parents.
Actually, I love giving candy to children (probably to overcompensate for my childhood). Halloween is the only time I can do it without people thinking I'm some sort of creep. Otherwise I'd do it every day. I'd also buy them ice cream bars in the summer when the truck came round.

(2,396 posts)I instantly recognized the ones wrapped up in orange and black paper. They were kind of a Bit O Honey crossed with peanut butter. They were faithfully found in my 50s-60s heyday.
Now we don't even get any kids anymore for years but we always get the candy anyway just in case
GallopingGhost
(2,404 posts)peanut butter kisses. You can still buy them!
I hate peanut butter but oddly, I can eat those. Probably because it's what my parents used to give out.
I think they're a lot like taffy-have to soften them up a bit in your mouth.
Kittycow
(2,396 posts)Not quite gourmet but I liked them!
The older ones were kind of hard and you really had to work them! But I had teeth then
GallopingGhost
(2,404 posts)I still can't figure out for sure if it's the same company, but two different candies. Mary Janes are flat, in a yellow wrapper with a black band, and they say Mary Jane on them. Mary Jane brand peanut butter kisses have no writing, come in the orange or black wrapper, and are unevenly round.
But, they are both peanut butter and molasses flavor. Do the actual Mary Janes have a soft peanut butter center? I haven't had one for years.

(2,396 posts)I looked too but only saw that kind...on Amazon, of course! I wonder if they're still a big blob. They only got a 3.8 rating
GallopingGhost
(2,404 posts)still a big blob. I had a free one at the bank last week.
The paper is still waxy, and remember how when you open them, a lot of times the edge of the paper is kind of glued onto the candy? So you have to dig it out with your fingernail or just eat it? Lol, good times.

(1,900 posts)since I had any maryjane for Halloween.

(2,404 posts)I guess you could indulge depending on which state you're in.

Juice boxes are a favorite too.
Thinking of doing those freezer pops in the plastic as an option this year,
Stuck sticking up in ice i a cooler with some waterproof lights and some dry ice at the bottom for effect.

(18,497 posts)With horse, of course.
My friends and I were on one of the less developed back streets of the neighborhood.
And he CHASED us!
That was so deliciously terrifying.
And we really knew it was our beloved local vet as he was the one near who had a couple horses.....
But it is still so much fun when people take an effort to play like that.

(572 posts)I mean seriously. I always had some show up without kids and just basically dangle/shake their bags in front of me.

(30,765 posts)who dressed up in a creative costume every year. He gave out candy to the kids and had a great time. He and his wife were just a nice young couple who didn't have children but liked children.
One year, his wife had to go to the door with him because he was scaring the smaller children. Or so she said. I think we all knew him and were glad he was having a good time. He gave us great candy, too.

(115,869 posts)The prized candy was chocolate candy bars (and in those days they weren't those little bitty ones, either). I especially liked Almond Joys and Mars Bars.

(25,567 posts)I hated getting raisins.
Fortunately I never got dental floss, a toothbrush or batteries.
I remember always getting too many jaw breakers, Smarties, bubble gum, candy cigarettes that tasted toothpaste and wax lips.

(11,686 posts)Don't act all innocent and calling our kids of today fussy. I loved chocolate and hated candy corn and cheap taffy. I could tell if it was Brach's and Palmer. Brach's was OK and Palmer's sucks even to this day and this is an adult saying this. When I was a kid we were still allowed to take homemade snacks but that has changed over the years. I remember having friends who's parents who would go through every piece of candy to make sure there were not razors in them. Then there were parents who just threw out all of the candy. Halloween has changed a lot over the years except for kids candy judgement.

(4,254 posts)We are giving out fun size mars (milky ways) bars, coffee crisp, snickers, smarties (m&ms). Snack potato chips bags, and glow in the dark bottles of water. We are decorating the front yard and porch spooky with spooky sounds. I will be dressed up up as a witch giving out the treats. I hope it is not too cold. It snowed today up here.

(4,940 posts)It's payback to lousy neighbors! Kids on a sugar high? And heck YEAH Snickers. We splurge on Halloween, usually because it's about 20 below and the kids have to wear parkas, gloves, etc. We have a small entrance foyer where they can take off the parka and show off the costume. I think we have more fun than the kids do!

(51,726 posts)Every year we buy 5 of those big Costco bags of fun size chocolate bars. By the end of the evening we see the same kids coming back for seconds. LOL

(15,812 posts)There is only one street in our neighborhood that has trick or treaters. We dont live on that street. Some of the folks on that street just put out literal troughs of candy. One house hires essentially a bouncer that stands at the top of the driveway and stamps the kids hands. That house is owned by a guy that has a small local grocery chain. He gives out what we refer to as god sized candy bars.
I miss taking the kids down there to TOT. Every few houses would have wine or other drinks and snacks for the adults.
Im not even buying one bag for Tuesday.
Freddie
(9,275 posts)Bag of 135 assorted fun size M & Ms, each kid gets 2. When they're gone the light goes out. Hopefully none left. My local
Kmart (RIP) used to have boxes of full size Mars stuff (Snickers and Milky Ways) quite cheap and I would stock up. Alas our Kmart is a fond memory and I'm too lazy to drive 45 min. to the nearest Costco.

(24,330 posts)I used to love throwing handfuls of quarters into their bags.
Sadly, I haven't seen a kid at my door in years now. There ore so many entities that run safe Halloween events now, that's where they all seem to go.
