"A multinational security firm has secretly developed software capable of tracking people's movements and predicting future behaviour by mining data from social networking websites.

A video obtained by the Guardian reveals how an "extreme-scale analytics" system created by Raytheon, the world's fifth largest defence contractor, can gather vast amounts of information about people from websites including Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare.

Notice how they don't seem to find him actually working. He's working out, checking in, taking photos. But he's not working, or so it seems.

It is alarming, though, and if one could be sure it would be used "properly" against "legitimate" targets, that would (probably) be fine. But you know full well it will be misused by any number of entities, private and public.

I realize that one assumes a certain degree of risk to privacy when interacting on the internet. But this technology takes that risk to a whole new level.

GM knows when you are likely to buy another car. Banks try to predict who will default. Political campaigns figure out what they need in their messaging to sway votes.

And insurance companies treat your whole existence like a casino game.
