SS does not add one nickel to the deficit. Any talk of cutting SS to reduce the deficit is a CON. nt

(618 posts)2. Very good and informative Floor Speech...
The only inaccuracy I heard was Lloyd Blankfein's age. He's 58...
Well done Senator Harkin.

Well said. Very clear, and I agree on all points.
The payroll tax cut should end and a credit should be given to low income and lower middle class people in its stead.

(53,661 posts)6. The argument for maintaining the payroll tax cut is that it benefits those who don't make
enough to qualify for credits.
And the constant extortion on unemployment benefits continues. Returning the payroll tax cuts hurts the worst off like cutting the UEB does.
While Sanders was against the payroll tax cut as a funder of Social Security, removing the cap would accomplish the same thing. The major thing to me is the tax on the wealthy who have benefited the most form the Bush tax cuts. That will fill the holes in the budget.
I think the leaks and opinion pieces are doing exactly what Obama wants them to do - enrage the public enough to call their representatives as he asked them to do a month ago.
I posted the poll on Senator Sander's webpage today and believe we support his detailed list of the 'acceptable' and 'unacceptable' proposals listed.

(11,064 posts)4. Is Senator Harkin the only Democratic Senator to oppose this?
Where are the others?
Why aren't they speaking up at the present?

(12,882 posts)5. Yeah - where ARE the other Reps???
Maybe they should've listened to Tom's presentation. Maybe they're buying into the GOP phrase-ruse "Entitlements". I wish Grayson were already seated. We'd get some no-nonsense talk to bolster what Harkin is saying.

(57,936 posts)7. I called Barbara Boxer today. I gathered she also opposes this.
i also called Dianne Feinstein's office. I don't know where she stands.

(12,121 posts)8. Just give me the good old COLA. No fancy Chained CPI to disguise cuts.
We were told there would be NO CUTS IN BENEFITS on SSI.
