PBS - 'Dust Bowl'

An amazing video, documentary chronicle of the 30's collapse of the American prairie. ~ pinto

THE DUST BOWL chronicles the worst man-made ecological disaster in American history, in which the frenzied wheat boom of the "Great Plow-Up," followed by a decade-long drought during the 1930s nearly swept away the breadbasket of the nation. Vivid interviews with twenty-six survivors of those hard times, combined with dramatic photographs and seldom seen movie footage, bring to life stories of incredible human suffering and equally incredible human perseverance. It is also a morality tale about our relationship to the land that sustains us—a lesson we ignore at our peril.

It was very well done, got a real feeling what it was like to live in that area at that time, and that was heartbreaking... Children and neighbors died, but they stayed, continued to hope things would be better "next year."

but the background and day-to-day realities they all faced was an eye opener. As was the push to plow, plow, plow the grasslands in the late 20's, early 30's.

My family stayed on the East Coast. I was also amazed that he had so many great witnesses. They must have been awfully young in the '30s to be still around. How they stayed through years of those killing waves of dirt is a mystery to me, scared me witless just watching. Excellent photography, especially for the times, IMO.

Mainly grandparents of friends. Or their parents' recollections. They don't speak much about it. But I know, second hand, they scraped to get by. Picked crops when they could, got day labor.

I think what touched me most was the parallel with my family's history. The collapse of the potato crop in Ireland. The emigration.

History isn't always about who won or lost the war. Or, sometimes, the war at all. It's about people.

I have it set to record tomorrow night. There was a book written about Bear Bryant around 15 years ago. Part of it was about how Texas A&M practiced in Dust Bowl Texas. Pretty interesting stuff.
