3. Here's the thing (IMO)

The United States is now - finally - electorally and politically - BECOMING that which it was always advertised to be: a giant melting-pot of different races and nationalities, all having some semblance of equality, liberty, freedom and the land of equal opportunity for all.

The US has always CLAIMED to have "equality" for all but in reality, it hasn't (and still doesn't in too many ways). But it has been largely white heterosexual males who have had ALL the power and say politically and electorally. They dominated everything - the political makeup of the nation (electorate), the power structure, the business infrastructure. Everything. They made the rules everyone else was subjected to - legally, politically, socially.

No more. THAT is what is changing and has slowly been changing over the history of this nation as the electorate was expanded through hard fought battles to include women and blacks, asians and latinos - everyone. If you look at who all is voting now, it's clear that the US is FINALLY becoming what it has always purported itself to be. EVERYONE is voting and making their voices heard via the ballot box. EVERYONE has the power therein to shape this country. That is as it should be. THAT is Democracy.

And to see these old curmudgeons FIGHTING that every step of the way: suppressing the vote, playing dirty tricks with machine counts, diddling with registrations and ballots, cutting voting hours, implementing newfangled Jim Crow laws (Voter ID), all while claiming that what is happening is "unfair, unAmerican, cheating, voter fraud", etc. etc. is just jaw-dropping.

They always say "we want to take our country back!".



Back to WHAT? Back to a time when only white males could own property and vote and make all the rules and run everything?

THAT is not what America was advertised to be. It was advertised to be "land of liberty". PERIOD. It wasn't advertised to be "land of liberty for white guys who own land".

Now that America is finally BECOMING that which it has always aspired to be and claimed to be, these guys want to STOP the whole process and slam it into REVERSE!

I don't think America is going to stop BECOMING America just because these old farts don't like it all of a sudden when women, blacks, Latinos, Asians, etc. etc. have POWER via the vote and the ballot box to shape this country.

Forget that shit. This is WHY Barack Obama's Presidency is and has been and will be so incredibly historic. This man and his life; his heritage and his Presidency - and particularly the election we were all just part of - is the first glimpse of our America - the REAL America - becoming EVERYTHING America has always claimed to be, promised to be and aspires to be. This is why the ONE word that he used as the basis for his campaign was:

There's no going back now. Nor should there be any going back. No way. It's just not going to happen.

The demographics are only going to tip in the direction of greater equality from here on...we are seeing a nation that is moving away from its status quo to a new status and the freak out is in full force on the right.

They have no message that is appealing to the electorate of the 2016 and beyond races...without kicking the lunatics back to the fringes and moving SIGNIFICANTLY to the center, the Republicans are as good as done outside of the Confederacy. Maybe they SHOULD just try to secede again...

America is a democracy, not a mere republic, and we should proclaim that from the rooftops.

OK, I understand that Dr. Franklin had a different opinion, and that may have had some justification in 1787. In 2012 it does not.

The first time I heard anyone expressing the view that America is a republic and should never be a democracy, it was expressed by (and I hope Dave and Charlie Koch are reading this) the reprobate Robert Welch, New England candy manufacturer and founder of the John Birch Society. Welch feared and hated democracy and thought he was better than everyone else because he had money. He believed in a social hierarchy that has no justification in nature. The Republican Party of 2012 is certainly not the party of Eisenhower (whom Welch thought was a Communist, an epithet Welch notoriously used all to freely). Today's GOP, or at least the one we beat back Tuesday, had more in common with Welch's Birch Society than with Eisenhower's Republicans.

Throughout history, no experiment with aristocracy (from the Greek meaning rule by the best) has ever been anything but an oppressive, self-serving system benefiting only the so-called aristocrats. At times, the aristocratic class became so dysfunctional that violent revolution was necessary to purge it from the body politic. Aristocracy was never more than tyranny by another name, with each aristocratic era naming the highest placed aristocrat as the zenith of the human race. Imagine that mid-eighteenth century Frenchmen had grovel before King Louis XV, tyrant, spendthrift, pedophile, war monger and womanizer. The Russian people at the end of the nineteenth century were made to prostate themselves before Tsar Nicholas II, who winked at anti-Semitic pogroms and led his people into a disastrous war that he ultimately paid for his own life and those of his wife and children. Well, that was landed aristocracy. Wouldn't an industrial aristocracy be different? Or a finacial aristocracy? Right. They'll steal elections for the like of George W. Bush and Mitt Romney and then tell us that they are the pinnacle of humanity. The industrial/finacial aristocrat would be a man with the brains of Dan Quayle, the concern for humanity of Bob Murray, the rock solid convictions of Mitt Romney and ethical temperament of Jaimie Dimon.

Tell the Koch brothers to pack it up. We can rule ourselves better than they can.

The model of a hierarchical America with billionaires at the top dictating to the rest of us how we shall live and vote has been repudiated. They tried to impose it on us with racist voter ID laws and restricted access to the polling places, but we beat them back and beat them hard. There wet dream of invisible minorities, subservient women (barefoot and pregnant, of course), homosexuals in pillories and impoverished toiling workers will not be America's future.

America is a democracy. Shout it from the rooftops.

Unless they are willing to support higher taxes on the top 5% in this country and no tax breaks for companies that outsource, they are doomed for the next two election cycles. They have to make a show of their commitment by throwing Norquist under the bus and doing so in a very public way. It's either Norquist or the nation. It's their choice.
