(24,411 posts)This conversation was in Des Moines at WHO radio. This exchange is between Mittens and the other guy is right-wing (VERY right-wing) radio host Jan Michaelson.
The conversation happened during a station break. Michaelson had been interviewing Romney, and this conversation happened at a hard break at the top of the hour. Romney did not know that he was being recorded or filmed. He assumed the conversation was private.
I found this footage really revealing. For one, Romney will do ANYTHING to avoid talking about his faith. That topic was clearly off the table and this is why Romney is so angry that Michaelson is pressing Romney on his abortion views. I have always found it incredibly unfair and bizarre, that in 08 Obama's religion and the words of Rev Wright were the topic of discussion for several weeks. It was central to the Republican attack campaign on Obama. But, reporters aren't even allowed to ask Romney about his Mormonism?
What a crock. That religion is bizarre. Romney explains it himself, that when Jesus returns, he will rule in Israel and in Missouri. I've also read about Mormonism and Missouri is sacred ground to them. They believe that the original Garden of Eden was in Missouri. It's very bizarre. Very telling that Obama never mentioned it, nor did he "Swiftboat" Romney with this bizarre religion. Because, believe me, there are many looney-toons beliefs in Mormonism.
With respect to the video, I was struck my Romney's petulance. He was a complete asshole and he was so lucid and articulate when he was defensive and angry with Jan Michaelson. We rarely see this side of Mitt. It bothers me that, on one hand, Romney is a doddering, humble dunderhead to the public--but behind closed doors (and when he is unaware that he's being taped), he's got a razor-sharp, defensive tone. He seems to have no problem intimidating and bullying Michaelson.
This underscores how Romney behaved when he made his "47 percent" comments. He was so smooth. Never stumbling. I feel like America doesn't really know Mitt Romney. When we see his true self, behind closed doors--it's nearly the opposite of his public persona. He's not genuine. He seems very angry and combative.
Just some observations. I thought the video was very interesting...

(12,882 posts)Hell, if folks REALLY KNEW what the beliefs of the Mormon faith are, they might begin to feel more receptive to Muslims! I try not to dwell on it too much, but I confess I feel rather alone while bobbing in a sea of humanity that mostly places their hopes in almighty super-heros! My gut feeling about Mitt is that he DOESN'T believe all the shit about supreme beings, but DOES believe in the power of using his phony "faith" for personal gain and profit.

(12,754 posts)Will he rule in both Israel and Missouri at the same time -- or will Missouri be kind of like Crawford, Texas was for Dubya. Jesus will just pop over to Branson for a little R&R and maybe catch him some country music?

(27,630 posts)Romney is sharp, but nobody would ever know it based on his stilted, gee shucks public appearances.
He is used to barking at people, you can tell. He comes across as an uptight dork to the public, but in reality he is an aggressive snake.
That interviewer was asking good questions, but Romney was acting like those were unfair questions.

(53,661 posts)Granted, Mitt's got the Christian Second Coming down. JC arrrives and the Earth hears a might thump or rings like a bell, but he's ticked off and will kill all the unbelievers, etc. But the clip doesn't get an answer to the Missouri question. I doubt after Mitt running over this guy, that it was answered later in the interview.
I've read some wild stuff claiming Missouri is gonna be the place to be when everything goes to hell, tsunamis take out the coastline, stuff like that. Believe it or not, I've met real people who moved inland in fear of their belief in prophecy. The Earth standing still, and they say then it will begin rotating the other way, and the entire process would be devastating.
Several all-American denominations developed after the New Madrid Earthquake, which did astounding damage to the Midwest. It was located in what was then the Louisiana territory, now Missouri:
Some people thought it was a sign that The End© was near and went into a literalist fanaticism looking to be spared. I'm guessing that is what Mitt is referring to, but I just don't see how they make that link.
Californians could cite the San Andreas Fault as being pivotal to Bible prophecy, too, if one wants to go that road. I thought Mormons felt Utah was important.
Interesting though, the Wikipedia page shows how the first national response to a disaster was needed:
Disaster relief
A request, dated January 13, 1812, by William Clark (famous for his exploration of the American West with Meriwether Lewis and the Corps of Discovery from 1803 to 1805), then the governor of the Louisiana Territory (the territory was renamed the Missouri Territory soon after the quake to eliminate confusion with the new state of Louisiana), asked for federal relief for the "inhabitants of New Madrid County."
Whereas the Catalogue of miseries and afflictions, with which it has pleased the Supreme Being of the Universe to visit the inhabitants of the earth there are none more truly awful and destructive than Earthquakes ... The inhabitants of the late District now County of New Madrid, in this Territory, have lately been visited with several calamities of this kind, which have deluged large portions of their country and involved in the greatest distress many families, whilst others have been entirely ruined ... In the opinion of the said General Assembly provisions ought to be made by law for or cashiered to the said inhabitants relief, either out of the public fund or in some other way as may can meet to the cost demand availability of the General Government.
This is possibly the very first request that the U.S. Federal Government had received for aid from one of its territories.

His behavior in that video was clear--You question me?? How DARE you?
Michaelson was being very reasonable and asking very fair, basic questions. Romney was behaving like a bully--hoping to intimidate Michaelson into backing down.
Romney's defensiveness was off the charts.
Also, why won't Romney talk about his religion? Why is the topic obviously off limits? He was a Bishop in that religion and supposedly sooo devout. If his beliefs are so damn important to him and so central to his core---why would he not want to talk about it? He's being a hypocrite and he's not being very true to his religion--by hiding it in the upstairs attic--as if it's his crazy aunt.
At least Obama is authentic. Romney seems like a big fake with a Jeckyl/Hyde thing going on.
And you're right--they've buried Ryan. Where has he been? I think they keep him at community centers in red pockets of ultra-red counties. He's shoring up the loon vote. Putting him on the national stage frightens moderate Republicans and Independents so they have to hide him.

If Obama had said this, the entire Republican campaign would have been set aside to focus on that comment.
This is big, buried news.

(24,411 posts)Am I listening to the correct part? Are you hearing what I am hearing?
At 1:34, Romney says, "Christ appears in Jerusalem, splits the Mount of Olives to stop the war that's coming in to kill all the Jews, it's...it's our church believes that. That's where the coming and glory of Christ occurs. We also believe that over the thousand years that follows in the millenium He will reign from two places. That the law will come forward from one place and uh....from Missouri and the other will be in Jerusalem."
What I heard is that Christ would return (according to Romney) to Jerusalem to stop the war that would kill Jews. In effect, Jesus would save the Jews.
Is that what you heard too?

(3,576 posts)Missouri lol, didn't Joseph Smith get lynched in Missouri? Romneys,
faith is built on con men and liars so his constant flip flops are no surprise.

(5,390 posts)In a couple of places he defends his ability to stay neutral in regards choice, he explains how that doesn't violate his faith to allow others to have a different opinion. If you listen closely at the very end he states something very different. He tells the reporter when he was governor of Massachusetts he vetoed any legislation that came across his desk that dealt with choice.

(13,418 posts)the end of the Campaign that the 'craziness' of this 'religion' would be out on MSM....no such luck.
I was talking to a fellow Dem yesterday and she was just livid about, what she called, this cult.
They believe that God lives on some planet called Elok (sp?) and that when one dies (I assume the males), he gets to go to that planet and be a little 'god.'
Joseph Smith was a conman...he wanted to have lots of sex and to avoid taxes.
You're right...Obama's religion was front and center. Mormonism should be discussed as well. I bet lots of people have googled it and learned that it is pretty crazy.
Psychologically, Mi$$ has one bad temper....he's a bully. Maybe a sociopath like W. He cannot become president.
Where's Ryan these days? Out raping?
