Romney 2011: Federal Disaster Relief For Tornado And Flood Victims Is ‘Immoral,’

By Brad Johnson on Jun 14, 2011 at 12:40 pm

Obama meets victims of the Joplin tornado.
Asked about federal disaster relief for recent tornado and flood victims at last night’s GOP debate, candidate Mitt Romney called the spending “immoral” and said the Federal Emergency Management Agency should be privatized. With greenhouse pollution on the rise, the United States has been struck by a “punishing series of billion-dollar disasters.”

there has to be a FEDERAL coordination and federal funding because these are multi-state disasters needing central coordination and communication, AND we need to sometimes redistribute, YES, redistribute funds to areas that get hit more often because if a region of nationa suffers economically due to disasters we ALL suffer. It hurts the WHOLE economy in many instances. Plus federal help is needed MORALLY. THAT is the MORAL thing to do. Also, in big disasters FEDERAL military and other FEDERAL agencies need to be activated.

So, again, FUCK MITT-TWIT ROBME. Is he saying we should send it to the states but give no federal help or money at all??

That is STUPID and IMMORAL !!

He didn't say disaster relief was Immoral ... He didn't answer the question about disaster relief ... went into a rant about the deficit ... I don't like it when Democrats manufacture headlines any more then when the Republicans do it!

Remember When Mitt Romney Called Disaster Relief Immoral and Wanted to Privatize It?

As Sandy bears down with a potentially life-threatening storm, we flash back to the 2011 primaries when Mitt Romney called the debt resulting from disaster relief ‘immoral’ and wanted to privatize it. Asked about federal spending on disaster relief in the context of the tornadoes and flooding hitting many states at the time, Romney claimed we can’t keep spending money on disaster relief and putting our children in debt.

ROMNEY: Every time you have an occasion to take something from the federal government and send it back to the states, that’s the right direction. And if you can go even further and send it back to the private sector, that’s even better. (...) We cannot — we cannot afford to do those things without jeopardizing the future for our kids. It is simply immoral, in my view, for us to continue to rack up larger and larger debts and pass them on to our kids, knowing full well that we’ll all be dead and gone before it’s paid off. It makes no sense at all.

Mitt Romney also said the Federal Emergency Management Agency should be privatized — you know, so it would be for profit, which has proven to be a disastrous idea in and of itself. See, corporations whose only responsibility is to make a profit tend to not want to pay up when disaster strikes. It’s expensive to pay up, so they try to find ways to duck and dodge doing so.

4. Peep this scenario

There's a horrible disaster and you're left on a boat above your house which is 10 feet underwater. You see a FEMA rescue team in the distance. They're approaching and when they arrive, you're just so excited to be rescued.

"Ma'am, do you have your FEMA certificate? I'm sorry, this is a private company. Folks have to pay in to receive services. We can't take you with us."

Think I'm exaggerating? This is the new libertarian conservatism. Check out this link, this is how "pay-for-play" disaster management actually works in a real-life scenario:

die hard republicans. They don't want no damn federal Guvnment. They want it privatized. They would rather let their house burn down or drowned before they vote "democrat" They have and will continue to vote with republicans. No matter if they die. same with TN and Oklahoma.
When the disaster hit Virginia last year Eric Canter said pretty much the same thing. He said The victims should give up something in "entitlements' to receive disaster funds. And they LOVE Him for it. This is why I said "die hard republicans". I feel no sympathy. They don't care neither do I.

10. Too bad this didn't come out sooner, like before the debates.

Mittins campaign would be 10-15 points down in just about every poll--just on this statement. Its true that there are die hard repugs out there, but there are people who do have a brain who lean toward voting R. But if this did come out before the debate, Obama would hang this around his neck through ad's and thereby sinking this uncaring, self serving POS. We would also be hearing/seeing news stories every day that the Obama campaign is looking at a landslide. Oh, the ad from Obama would show pics of Bush and his discusting fly-over after Katrina.
