Mitt Romneys religion has managed to stay out of the headlines of mainstream media for most of the campaign, but as we get closer and closer to this election, it has become clear that this is an issue worth discussing in detail, and Mike Papantonio recently spoke with author Nancy Cohen about Mitt Romneys tenure as a Mormon Bishop, and what his extreme religious views actually mean to voters.

Now we have a powerful regional and minority religion that people don't know. The prejudgments by "win for rich guys at any cost" fundamentalists have silenced themselves. The issue of influence is larger because Romney might well be considered part of the leadership.
What financial and spiritual elites among Mormons are there and how intent on influencing government and politics? And not on foreign policy or social agendas but good old money and power? I don't know anything in particular. Nothing is aired abroad not even a grumbling "anti-Mormonism" among the self silenced "I sold my soul to the GOP" born agains.
Besides Bishop Romney who are the real top wealthy and influential Mormons? What do they want?
To be fair, scoping out candidates is easy. Oil guys= oil wars. Vulture capitalist means a vast looting of public monies for Romney himself and his circles. Unlike a fairly desultory Bush, Romney probably really just wants to do that one thing as president. Really wants it and can't say too much about it. Certainly has zero interest in anything else beyond the power trip. "Why I want to be president". Well, why did he choose to be vulture capitalist? Certainly had his heart in it more than his brief political stints.
