Related: About this forumUS Calls Julian Assange 'Enemy Of State'
&feature=plcp"The US military has designated Julian Assange and WikiLeaks as enemies of the United States - the same legal category as the al-Qaeda terrorist network and the Taliban insurgency. Declassified US Air Force counter-intelligence documents, released under US freedom-of-information laws, reveal that military personnel who contact WikiLeaks or WikiLeaks supporters may be at risk of being charged with "communicating with the enemy", a military crime that carries a maximum sentence of death. The documents, some originally classified "Secret/NoForn" - not releasable to non-US nationals - record a probe by the air force's Office of Special Investigations into a cyber systems analyst based in Britain who allegedly expressed support for WikiLeaks and attended pro-Assange demonstrations in London...".* The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down.

(67,782 posts)First, your statement is an oxymoron - if it's a "fact" it's not "untrue" - which is it?
Second, the US never called Assange an enemy of the state.
Just when did the US call Assange an enemy of the state? In fact, the Pentagon stated the exact OPPOSITE!

(14,622 posts)This is the same designation held by al-Qaeda, and it means that Assange could be killed or detained without trial
by John Glaser, September 26, 2012
Newly declassified documents have revealed that the US military designated WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange an enemy of the state, who can be killed or detained without trial.
The documents were released under a Freedom of Information Act request for an investigation into a US Air Force cyber analyst who allegedly expressed support for WikiLeaks and attended pro-Assange demonstrations.
...
WikiLeaks is nothing more than a publishing platform and Julian Assange is properly understood as a journalist. For the US military to designate him in the same class as al-Qaeda militants is the greatest affront to first amendment press freedoms in a very long time."

If so, I notice a distinct lack of any countervailing evidence or link to
same in your post. It's very unseemly to just flat out assert that Philip
Dorling & The Sydney Morning Herald are telling bald-faced lies, with
absolutely nothing to back it up.
George II
(67,782 posts)And until they print or post the actual words in the documents they're interpreting for us, we won't know what they REALLY say.
As for countervailing evidence? There is none, as there is no "proof" or documented evidence that the US declared Assange an "enemy of the state". Got any?
I believe the term used in Manning's courtmartial is "aiding the enemy", which may be true. But the "enemy" in that case are the terrorists in Iraq. You guys are projecting that charge to mean Assange, which has never been stated by anyone other than those who deify him.

(19,326 posts)that you have absolutely no proof of your intense repetative assertions, flatly stating
that this news is being mis-reported because ... ahh... well, just because. That's why.
Sorry, no cigar.

Turns out, it's not just that pesky Sydney Morning Herald that is carrying this news, as there is
apparently a veritable epidemic of "mis-statements" by news sites.

Just as those who fought against civil rights in the 50's and 60's look like terrible, sub-human, reprobates to the present day people; so will those in power pushing these...well fascist tactics, and those supporting these fascist tactics, look like terrible reprobates in the future.

Essentially we are moving into censorship and criminalization of political speech. n the future this same logic could be used to declair a political or speech site like say... DU. Wake up and think folks!

(19,326 posts)this case will come out of the shadows and into the light of day,
for all to see. i.e. that the M$M (calling Rachael Maddow?) will pick
up on it and expose this jagurnaut from the Death Star.
Obama's position on this is absurd, saying "oh, la, la-la! Not to
worry ... I'LL never use it, I promise"; but then his DoJ turned
around to win their appeal saying "oh, this is a national security
emergency!!!!" in order to coerce an appeals court to over-rule
a lower court that found the NDAA to be blatantly NOT constitutional.
There's an open discussion going on this rapidly developing story,
at this reddit site I just ran across tonight, if you're interested.
It's packed with up to the minute facts and factoids.
