Stephen Colbert: Guest Sen. Bernie Sanders Worked With Biden To Create The Most "Progressive Agenda"

Sen. Bernie Sanders Worked With Biden To Potentially Create The "Most Progressive Agenda Since FDR

Senator Bernie Sanders admits that Joe Biden's ideas aren't as progressive as his, but if Biden adopts the policy recommendations from their joint task forces, the Democratic Party will be pursuing its most progressive agenda in generations.

Sen. Bernie Sanders Wants To Make Sure Every American Can Receive A Covid-19 Vaccine For Free

Senator Bernie Sanders wants to make sure no one in this country has to pay for a Covid-19 vaccine since American taxpayer money is funding the research by the pharmaceutical companies.

and most of the things talked about here were in the 2016 platform. Does anyone know why the 2020 platform is FDR level but 2016 wasn't?

He says, "If we elect Democrats, if Democrats control the Senate and the House, we're going to implement that agenda, maybe even more."

This is a big change.

since Trump's election (i.e. the restoring faith in institutional expertise, rebuilding alliances, and pandemic preparedness), the 2016 and 2020 platforms are very similar in domestic and foreign policy proposals. The 2020 platform is a longer document.

The relative "progressiveness" of the 2016 and 2020 platforms is open to debate, but one thing is clear: If the 2020 Democratic Platform is the "most progressive ever" then the same can be said of the 2016 Democratic Platform at the time it was adopted. And because the two platforms are so similar, the 2016 platform was indeed a "progressive" document.

My guess is that the fiery senator from VT is framing the platform as a win at least in part because we all know now what happens when folks decide to sit out an election or vote third party. Unfortunately, not everyone learned that hard lesson in the 2000 Bush v Gore election.

For those wondering whether the platform is "FDR level", I strongly recommend actually reading those 1930s platforms which are silent on social justice issues, unequal treatment under the law, voting rights, and the scourge of racism. Like FDR, HRC had a detailed 100 Day Plan in 2016, as I'm sure Biden will as well.

Notwithstanding the one time candidate's support, according to Vox hundreds of BS delegates voted against the platform.

Step one for evaluating the platform objectively is reading it. The 2020 Democratic Party Platform is available in its final version here.
