Nancy Shively, an Oklahoma teacher, voted for Trump in 2016. Now, amid a heated debate on reopening schools and watching his lack of leadership on a response to the pandemic, she says she fears for her life:

(153,160 posts)they were fine when they thought Trump would just fuck over THOSE PEOPLE but now that THEIR lives are in jeopardy, suddenly they CARE
UGH
I do give her points for acknowledging she was not paying attention although honestly, I bet she was - it's the results she does not care for.

(5,935 posts)She knows what's behind the school-funding problems and she knows what is causing this current issue, which is a "failure of leadership." She understands the challenges with face-to-face and virtual teaching during the pandemic, and understands that this is a big experiment at the expense of students and teachers.
Most of those attacking her after her statements, she says, are "liberals and never-Trumpers."
She goes on to say, "I have to say I wasn't paying attention. I should have been and I wasn't...and I regret that. I'm going to take responsibility for that and own it publicly."
As hard as it might be, I think it's better to welcome and encourage ex-Trump voters who finally see the light rather than ridicule them.

(153,160 posts)you can bet that even if they don't vote for Trump, they'll vote for the Trump humping assholes that enable him

(1,665 posts)A leopard doesn't change its spots. She's a selfish person who took delight in voting to hurt other people. I have no reason to believe she will stop being a selfish person who delights in hurting others, just because this one time she got hurt.

(5,935 posts)Rather than educate and welcome, we vilify people who voted for Trump. Holding grudges, even against people who voted because of immigration or race, is a rather base human emotion - especially if the people have changed. People can change, or I wouldn't have been an effective teacher.
Most of the teachers I know who voted for Trump are not racist. They didn't pay attention, as the teacher in the video stated.

(1,665 posts)And Trump voters are villains.
Note: I am not an etymologist, and it is entirely possible that "Villain" and "vilify" have different roots. However, for entertainment purposes, I'm running with it here!

(5,935 posts)And if they change their minds and "rehabilitate," they're still villains.
Democrats and progressives can do better than that. Otherwise, we'd keep criminals locked up forever.

(53,776 posts)for years. We know that. Many will say they voted for trump for economic reasons but please. Their reasons were they wanted to get rid of the black guy and were too misogynist to vote for a woman. And incidentally, the black guy saved the economy from his repug predecessor's failures so economic reasons had nothing to do with it.

(5,935 posts)Are you saying that anybody who voted for Trump in 2016, no matter the reason, even if it was for racist reasons, is irredeemable? What about some of the members of the Lincoln Project who voted for Trump but now vow to vote straight Democratic Party? Are they villains? Regardless of whether they come out in the future against the economic issues we champion, is their denouncement of racism and authoritarianism (Trumpism) a bad thing because they previously voted for Trump?
I recall a series of "cultural awareness" trainings in my school district last year. After being wonderfully instructed about systemic racism and the straight lines of history between slavery and current policy, I witnessed some remarkable transformations, including a few white, politically naive teachers overcome with tears of guilt at what they had supported. They became awakened, even if partially, and the ones I know are still woke. They won't vote for Trump. A few apologized, as did the teacher in the video in the original post. Racists still support Trump, and they always will. Those who were misled or mistaken can change their minds for the right reasons, and we should be supportive of them.
Again, refusal to allow for humans to change and redeem ourselves, to admit mistakes and try to understand how they made mistakes, is decidedly against what Democrats and progressives espouse.

(53,776 posts)and buyers' remorse repugs too. But we're no fools. If Biden wins the Lincoln Project guys will go back to being repugs and figuring out how to beat Democrats.
Got it?
In fact we should all be wary of all repugs as most will go back to being repugs as they will have good excuses since they and the never-trumpers will be able to say they helped rid the nation of trump and allegedly cleaned up their party. Don't fall for it.
For now though, the enemy of our enemy is our friend. Until later of course.

(5,935 posts)Vilifying the teacher in the video is counter-productive.

(53,776 posts)Teachers are no dummies. She had to sense, even if like she said, she wasn''t paying attention, she had to know something wasn't quite right with trump. Like I said before, we welcome her vote but most likely she'll revert to being a repug, probably even on her down ballot this coming election.
Again, the enemy of our enemy is friends for now, but since when do we trust repugs? I'll use a quote from of all people, a repug now. Reagan famously said about the Russkies: "Trust but verify." In other words, make sure.

(6,928 posts)... 4 years ago. Hard to believe she didn't hear the sold-out traitor call to Russia to find blah-blah-blah... But, but, but... her EMAILS. Hard to believe she thought it was OK to 'Lock her up! Lock her up! Lock her up!' without any evidence of any wrong-doing provided. Hard to believe she never heard of 'Due Process' and FAIRNESS of not getting unduely smeared without any proof given. Hard to believe she never heard about REAL 'fake news' and voting-suppression tactics.
Finally, hard to believe she never heard of the true meaning of KARMA. Hard to believe she was just another 'sucker born every minute' to the malignant opportunistic con-man spewing hate and division, without any basic respect of the Constitution. And hard to believe she thought it was OK to intimidate a woman while stalking her behind her back during debates.
If so, where are all these deplorables from? A teacher 'not paying attention??' Where did she graduate??
