(17,931 posts)It's not binary, like the right wants us to think. Or some on the left for that matter. There are many shades on the continuum and we're waaaay too far to the Laissez-faire side. Market economics coupled with liberal democracy is the fire that's driven the rise in our civilization in the last 200 years. The lot of the average person in 1750 wasn't all that different from 1000 CE or 500 BCE for that matter. The difference between 1750 and 2020 is nearly unimaginable. But just like fire, it can keep you warm or it can kill you. It's all in how you control it, for the benefit of everyone, including the planet. And that's liberal democracy's role.
So no, she's not slamming capitalism. I seriously doubt she advocates some style of the abject failure, Marxist-Leninism or some other system. We must allow Jane or Joe to freely come up with some innovation, marshal some capital, then go out, hang their shingle and sell their product or service to the general public, improving their lives and the lives of their customers. The trick is to do so fairly to Jane and Joe and to everyone else at the same time.

Also remember that JOBS are not connected to WORK. We have deteriorating roads, overcrowded classrooms, too few healthcare providers, etc., etc. BUT still few JOBS. Because that WORK is not profitable to a CORPORATION.
