(54,770 posts)for most part. But I enjoyed Nances take on racism. He usually talks about national security, mass killings, etc. This was a little different, and his point of view was heartfelt. He was really annoyed at Sullivans BS.
Rice was good too.

(206,016 posts)Here in New York, I'm getting anxious as I see more people out and about, am dreading the upcoming tourist season. I still go out only when I have to, last I heard cases were on the rise in 22 states. Bill may not be afraid of getting sick and seeing the numbers increase in his area, but I am!
BigmanPigman
(51,627 posts)since he is not helping situations and may be making them worse (and he lives in LA where the numbers are CLIMBING). It seems like he has been drinking some of tRump's Kool-aid.
Rhiannon12866
(206,016 posts)That's obviously a huge hit to his income, but that's no excuse. He could afford to donate a million $ to Obama.

(51,627 posts)Not ONE is agreeing with Bill on this one, including millenials. People are pissed off...he went too far.

Probably the most irresponsible thing Bill Maher has ever said.

(29,322 posts)I don't want to spread the coronavirus to my mom who is over 60.
I also disagree with this
Maher slammed the New York Times for its Yes, we mean literally abolish the police, editorial. And he applauded conservative George Will for writing that the Senate should go Democratic because a partys bad management the GOP must be punished or it wont change.

I actually follow the person that wrote the editorial. She actually helped out prisoners during the pandemic. She actually does the work and knows what she is talking about. I prefer her to Maher to be honest.
I also wonder what generation is serving in these post 9-11 wars?

(206,016 posts)We've had a complete shutdown here in Northeastern New York which resulted in relatively few cases, but this is also a tourist area and we're seeing some openings just in time for the seasonal influx of tourists which scares me to death. Any groceries, gas stations/convenience stores that remained open required face coverings for anyone entering the store, but will tourists from other places observe the protocols which have kept us safe until now??
And that's admirable to reach out to prisoners, I know that local hospitals, nursing homes and jails have prohibited visitors since early March, but it's been a problem with workers going in and out and that's where most of the cases have been.

BigmanPigman
(51,627 posts)but he is one on a loooong list these days.

(21,151 posts)His monologue was pretty flat, too.
He does this much better to an audience. His energy is wrong and his jokes aren't funny. Having it chopped with clips of audiences laughing really doesn't help.

(111,339 posts)tp buy time for hospitals to stock up (except Big Dummy stole a lot of it), for early research to be done and treatments to be investigated, to decrease the rate of infection so the system wouldn't be overwhelmed within a few weeks, and to explore strategies like testing and tracing, something this country has totally dropped to ball on, again thanks to the lack of leadership from the criminals in the White House who are more concerned with protecting the fragile ego of a man baby than they are the country.
People in their 20s and 30s are dying of this thing, but something like 80% of the deaths are in people over 75. Obviously, common sense measures like masking, handwashing, and avoiding crowds indoors are necessary, while you don't want to remain on house arrest, you don't want to court death, either. Strategies should be directed toward reducing viral load, not eliminating the ability to live one's life.
I know people that age who haven't seen significant others in weeks, while both isolated and worked from home. Clearly, this was not going to work forever. People out there are hitting a wall and their mental health is starting to suffer. I'm not their judge. I just hope they are taking some common sense precautions and will leave that full return to being normal young people until a vaccine is available.
Likely this is what the sensible ones will do. There is not much we can do about the ones who aren't sensible except feel sorry for them if they go out in crowds, get drunk, get stupid, get Covid.
Rhiannon12866
(206,016 posts)There are areas which observed strict precautions, as you said, where opening up certain venues is relatively safe. But there are other areas in states that didn't follow protocol and cases are spiking right now - where returning to life as we knew it would be foolhardy, despite anyone's age. And the 100+ year olds that Bill mentioned made news headlines for a reason.
Warpy
(111,339 posts)but nobody's going to tell our local Beer Gut Brigade boys what to do, they're the main scofflaws.
Most people are taking this seriously and wearing masks in public. I just keep reminding myself I'm not their judge.
Our rates are steady, but the SOB is still spreading. I just wish we had a truly accurate antibody test so I could find out if that weird thing I had in March was it. I did take precautions. I'm old and had a light case.
I'm just terrified about what is going to happen next winter as we all move back indoors.
Rhiannon12866
(206,016 posts)Face coverings are mandatory to enter most stores and pretty much everything except groceries and gas stations/convenience stores - and a few fast food drive thrus - have been closed down until recently. But this area is a tourist destination and I'm scared to death what the influx of tourists will bring. Summers here are known for heavy traffic and crowds. The last time I was out I noticed an uptick in traffic and license plates from Virginia, Tennessee and Florida! And it's not like I drove all that far. Are these visitors going to observe the precautions we've gotten used to that have kept us safe, or are they going to behave as they always do, wall-to-wall crowds? I'm not looking forward to finding out.
Hang in there and stay safe!
