Mr Bowman was a Tuskegee Airman during WWII who couldn’t get a job in the Des Moines Public Schools after he completed college. He was finally hired when someone intervened for him and was a beloved teacher. He retired as Deputy Superintendent of DMPS after 35 years of service.

My sister was fortunate to be in his class in the early 60’s and the students loved how he engaged them, his humor, his love for them, and his passion for teaching.

One of his daughters became superintendent of the Pittsburgh public schools.
