Fun surprise: new to us Swiss Family Robinson film

Last night we were paying minor attention to the 60's version of that movie we selected on the Disney channel. Who hasn't seen that more than a few times, right?

After it was over, another Swiss Family Robinson qued up behind it. What? We've never seen or heard of it. Ever. RKO 1940 production in B/W. There were a few religious overtones and other glitches but IMO, really a good movie considering it's 1940 production values. And every bit as good as the one everybody has seen before.

What a fun and delightful surprise it was — kind of like watching the old King Kong for the first time.

Has anyone else seen this before?

There was another remake in the 80s or 90s and also a cartoon version. That's actually one of my favorites stories.

they gave us a choice of one ride each to pick. There were 4 of us. I chose the Swiss Family Robinson tree house.

They repurposed it but old timesrs like me remember when it was the Swiss Family Robinson home. I was in Disneyland in March before it closed and commented to my son that it used to be the Swiss family Robinson home. A couple overheard me and commented it should have stayed as Robinson home. We all laughed in agreement.

never watched the Disney version. I never liked what Disney did in their remakes.

2/3 of the way through my first century, I figured I would have at least heard of the RKO one.

watching it shortly after my brother and I read the book and that had to be around1960ish. We watched a lot of older movies then, when they came on the teevee. B&Ws were free to broadcast, I guess. There were movies in the afternoons after school so we watched them and this was one we wanted to see because we just read the book.

I wonder if it was a more regional thing that caused you to never see it. We moved a lot and some places had really different teevee options when it wasn't national news time or prime time network time.
