Lyrics:
And the ones that mother gives you, don't do anything at all
Go ask Alice, when she's ten feet tall
And if you go chasing rabbits, and you know you're going to fall
Tell 'em a hookah-smoking caterpillar has given you the call
And call Alice, when she was just small
When the men on the chessboard get up and tell you where to go
And you've just had some kind of mushroom, and your mind is moving low
Go ask Alice, I think she'll know
When logic and proportion have fallen sloppy dead
And the white knight is talking backwards
And the red queen's off with her head
Remember what the dormouse said
Feed your head, feed your head

It does annoy me that such a classic song is being used to sell cruises, but such is the fate of many classic 1960's songs.

(205,847 posts)I knew what it was about when I was a kid. I've wondered what exactly they're trying to sell with this...

(60,075 posts)William F Buckley used to sail out beyond US waters to smoke a Joint with friends. His only redeeming trait.

The attitude was a shift for Buckley, who in 1971 testified against loosening penalties but wrote in 1972 that he agreed with Cowan. It seems, in fact, that Buckley has smoked grass himselfbut only on his sailboat, outside the three-mile limit, TIME noted. His verdict: To tell the truth, marijuana didnt do a thing for me.'
Sure Billy Boy, I bet the galley was empty by the time you returned.

(51,624 posts)I would be pissed off at the Beatles for allowing their songs to be used in ads but then I remembered that Michael Jackson tricked his former friend Paul McCartney and bought the copyrights without Paul knowing it.
Maybe Gracie, Jorma and Jack need the money.

(340 posts)And changed the name of the band from Jefferson Airplane to Jefferson Starship and reduced Grace Slick's part in that and started making music that was crap he should have been put in front of a firing squad. Damn she had a voice that gives me shivers and the band was awesome. You need to be punished when you take perfection and totally screw it up!!

(9,966 posts)... every time it plays. The song's meaning, band... it seems inappropriate. I don't know the publishing or commercial rights, but they can be complicated. It's possible Grace had no veto and/or the band members get no residual. It may all depend on their contracts from long ago... On Facebook, Grace is as we'd expect... same counterculture attitude. The ad doesn't match her outlook. I've seen people comment and ask, but never see any replies or denials.

(2,412 posts)I find it distasteful for another reason. I would not want to be on a ship with people who were attracted by this ad. Are they all recreational drug addicts? Does it mean you can drink all the booze you want? They are escape artists? It sounds rather scary.

(9,696 posts)Not sure if it was this one. A company who's values she didn't like wanted one of her songs so she licensed the song to them and gave the money to a group that works for her values.
She's not a sell out by any means.
