Throughout human history, doomsayers -- people predicting the end of the world -- have lived largely on the fringes of society. Today, a doomsday industry is booming thanks to TV shows, movies, hyper-partisan politics, and the news media. With the country's collective anxiety on the rise, even the nation's wealthiest people are jumping on board, spending millions of dollars on survival readiness in preparation for unknown calamities.
We sent Thomas Morton to see how people across the country are planning to weather the coming storm.

(12,712 posts)I don't think that this idea of bunkers and surviving an "apocalypse" of any sort is something that they thought through carefully.
Let's see, surviving gangs could weld the doors shut and seal them into what turns out to be a tomb. The gangs could surround the compound and start messing with any exposed vents, etc. They could wait them out, creating encampments outside the bunkers and wait until the systems and supplies go.
Also, they have the problem of getting to their bunkers in the first place depending on the scenario. It is possible that they will be rip to shreds on their way.
In the case of a nuclear event, they had better be close to the bunkers, (or the jet they will take to their swaths of land out in nowhere) because they have, what, about thirty-minutes or so after a launch?
It seems, as was mentioned in the video, that this is a sort of catharsis for their fears. However, that may also contribute to distracting them from doing what they could to prevent the social kind of "apocalypse" that there addiction to wealth contributes to.
They need to watch the Mad Max movies to get a bit of insight into it and then start to work to turn this inequity around for there own sake and for humanity at large, realizing that we are all in this together and not about their asses being saved for any good reason other than wealth. I am not so sure a new start for humanity would be better if they were the survivors, but I think of the Morlocks in the Time Machine for some reason.
