Terrifying crash in Lubbock County Friday

LUBBOCK COUNTY, Texas (KCBD) — A news crew covering a highway crash in foggy west Texas came within inches of getting caught up in another crash.

The incident happened on Highway 84 in Lubbock County.

In a shocking video, a tractor trailer loses control and swerves around the crash — and into the grass as troopers run to get out of the way. A State Trooper who jumped into a nearby pick-up truck was pinned for a long time and another trooper was also hit.

Both are expected to be alright.

Highway 84 was shut down in both directions while crews cleared the scene.

From KCBD, Lubbock, Texas:

EXCLUSIVE VIDEO: DPS trooper struck by semi, driver extracted from pickup in multi-car pileup on Slaton Highway

Link: https://www.kcbd.com/2019/12/27/dps-trooper-injured-all-drivers-asked-avoid-highway-near-slaton/

(snips)

DPS tells us they initially responded to a two-vehicle crash on US 84, one mile east of Slaton, around 10:45 a.m. The crash blocked westbound lanes of US 84. While troopers were investigating the crash, a semi traveling eastbound jackknifed and came to final rest in the center median. Several other vehicles subsequently crashed into the back of the semi trailer.

A third semi was traveling eastbound approaching the scene when a red SUV changed lanes in front of it, causing the driver of the semi to jackknife and roll it over onto its side.Troopers on scene ran from the semi as it slid on the roadway into the barrow ditch. A DPS Trooper was struck by the trailer as it slid to final rest. The trooper was transported to University Medical Center in Lubbock for injuries sustained during the collision.

Our camera crew was filming live as the semi slid down the roadway and came to rest right in front of them. Another person involved in the crash was trapped inside his vehicle as the trailer came to rest on top of it. First responders on scene were able to extricate the driver and he was transported to University Medical Center in Lubbock with serious injuries.

There were a total of five crashes involving four semi tractor-trailers and four smaller vehicles.

Why the heck can't everyone slow down in dense fog?.........

Best wishes to those who were injured.......

Upon reading the reports on KCBD, the camera man said he saw the semi coming at him through the lens and ran away but left the video cam running.

Their latest update this morning reports no deaths, which is very lucky. I can't believe some guy jumped into that white pickup just before it was crushed. They said it took a long time to rescue him using the Jaws of Life.

Seems that old fashioned common sense has left us long ago for the sake of speed.
