I know that he has extremely clever and talented writers, but he deserves a lot of the credit and not just for his delivery - I remember one time there was breaking news while he was taping his monologue (think it was the announcement of the initial meeting between Trump and Kim Jong-un) and so he'd remain current, Colbert abandoned his prepared monologue and ad libbed the rest!
