(1,604 posts)I recently answered a Quorum question about how well Kamela Harris would do against Trump if she was the nominee. While I kept the analysis reasonably non-partisan, I did make the comment that I expect that we will be well into recession territory by the time the election rolls around, due in great part because of Trump's tariff war and the idiot tax cut.
Almost before I had pushed the Publish button, I had a Magat respond to me angrily, saying that I'm deliberately courting a recession like the evil, heathen Democrat that I am. Now, I personally am not looking forward to a recession - it's been more than ten years since the last one, and there are a lot of instabilities that have only grown worse over time. I think it will be in some respects worse than the Great Recession of 2007, though it'll be equity rather than real-estate led.
However, what it made me realize was that at a fairly deep level a lot of the true believers are both in active denial about the state of the economy and, I think, at least subconsciously aware that it's going to hit about the time that their President is going to face the Democrats. They know full well that the only thing that has kept his support up is the economy, and they are desperate to believe that the economy will manage to stay afloat until after he wins a second term.
I sense there is a panic beginning to move through the MAGAt base.
