This shark is going in some very shallow water right by some people. Something to think about next time you're at the beach. You may not know what else is in the water with you.

(4,516 posts)Surfers are usually the target. Last year some stand up paddle boarders were surrounded by 15 sharks at Dana Point in So Cal. A helicopter crew spotted the sharks and warned the paddle boarders. I think stand up paddle boarding is asking to be shark bate.

(14,961 posts)whole life. This is one thing I never forget each and every time I get in the ocean(thousands of times). It is their home. I'm not scarred unless something randomly brushes past me.(for instance a full can of soda once). When I was a young teen, a bluefish brushed my leg on a completely clear calm beach, I thought it was a shark, I didn't go back in the water for almost 2 years.

(5,935 posts)This was a juvenile white, looking for fish. I've surfed in Florida, North Carolina, California, and Hawai'i. I've seen sharks lots of times. Swimmers usually don't. But they're there. Drone technology shows us what surfers have always known. Sharks are almost always around, but they rarely bother people.
We should always be aware in the ocean; we should follow basic safety rules. But we should also understand that sharks are not out to get us.

(5,935 posts)On average, there are 16 shark attacks per year in the United States, with one fatality every two years. I'd be more worried about Necrotizing Fasciitis (Flesh-Eating Disease) or drowning (about 3,500 people in the U.S. die each year from drowning).
According to the Center for Disease Control there is an estimated 9,000-11,500 cases of necrotizing fasciitis occur each year in the United States, with a resultant 1,000-1,800 deaths annually.

(7,358 posts)Nor do I really want to swim in an ocean where people throw all kinds of waste, including radio active waste. I use to go out in the ocean quite often as a young kid. Never thought about sharks stalking me, although I'm sure it was happening. Let the surfers go out and risk their life, and limbs, more power to them.
You stay out of the ocean because you're scared of sharks?

(5,935 posts)The title is still a bit click-baity, but a surfer does fall quite close to a shark. No problem. The sharks are being sharks, and the surfers are being surfers. In Florida, especially, a shark bite is usually a case of mistaken identity or an over-zealous shark chomping its way through a school of bait fish with a human appendage unfortunately in the way.
This is Fort Pierce Inlet, in Florida, about 70 miles north of Palm Beach. It's one of my old stomping grounds. Of interest here it the beautiful ray, the manatee family, and a majestic osprey (I think). The sharks are probably spinners or black tips. Nature is beautiful, and nature sometimes hurts or kills. That shouldn't keep us away.

(17,984 posts)Was out about 100' from shore when all of the sudden there was a huge commotion behind me. About 20' away a stingray was on the surface, whacking the water trying to herd fish. That was fun to see, but afterwards I was really worried about stepping on a stingray.
