Related: About this forumUniverse Size Comparison 3D (We are very very very small...)
Published on Nov 10, 2017
Planets in our Universe can get extremely large, but stars get even bigger. In this video we explore the sizes of moons, planets, stars, and even beyond, including black holes and even galaxies.
Basically a comparison of the entire Universe.

(9,897 posts)The sheer SIZE of the universe relative to the puny Earth; and all we as Homo Sapiens have or ever will understand, should humble anyone. It really knocks me back on heels to contemplate the vastness of the universe.
I see those size charts and wonder to myself how ANYONE can honestly believe that "gawd" made it all just to isolate Man in the backwater boondocks with no way to communicate to or explore ANY of it, and then just quit (LOL, not bloody likely unless your knowledge and understanding are limited to bronze age knowledge of nature and space)...if someone needs a sense of awe or powerlessness to find meaning in life, then ponder the difference between the largest objects in that presentation and the infinitesimal nature of humanity in it all. There never was a need to invent god, just a species that arose on Earth with the ability to create myths and an inability to set them aside as knowledge made them obsolete.
Truly humbling to know that we are - as Carl Sagan said - simply 'star stuff' giving the universe a way to known itself. No matter how small and insignificant we are, we are also currently the only KNOWN intelligence in the universe. Unlikely to be the only, equally unlikely (yet possible) to be the first, almost assuredly not to be the last.
I just wish we were as passionate as a species about improving life for the many, instead of hoarding and excluding in favor of the few. Capitalism and materialistic greed - driven by advertising and inertia - are such pathetic systems on the cosmic scale as to be utterly inane.

(6,110 posts)Because of the simple fact that there are trillions and trillions of suns similar or larger than our sun, and they have zillions of planets altogether. The problem is universe is very sparsely populated. The distances between solar systems are tons and tons of light years from each other. Therefore it is highly unlikely any alien life out there can visit us or we can visit them. In spite of theory of relativity.
All it takes for evolutionary life to exist on a planet is the correct distance from it's sun so that temperatures remain in a life sustaining range. All the other planets in our solar system are either too close or too far from the sun for evolutionary life to exist.

(9,897 posts)But...I think the chances of intelligent life are a significant reduction from the likelihood of simpler forms of bacterial life.
Think about some of the natural climate variations and planetary impacts that factored into the situation for Homo Sapiens to evolve as we did...
If the asteroid that doomed the dinosaurs did not hit Earth, would the evolutionary path for small, furry mammals have opened at all?
If the ice ages that have occurred throughout history had been just a little more severe or longer, if the orbit of the planets was just a little bit further off...would Ice Cube Earth have thawed in time to allow life to advance again?
If other species developed nuclear weapons and energy and experienced a little less luck than we did with Chernobyl and Fukushima and instead of localized irradiation and dammage they managed to wipe themselves out entirely...
None of this implies a creator or god is a necessary condition to have life arise, but there are mind numbing numbers of things that had to go right for just humanity to arise (to say nothing of the fact that we seem to be determined to destroy our only home with reckless abandon)...it can really set your head to spinning in short order!

(6,110 posts)The possibilities are just mind numbing out there.
And I do believe modern humans would have emerged regardless of dinosaurs and other events. That is the magic of evolution. Every species is followed by a more intelligent or cunning or stronger species which makes the former extinct. Or....the seeds of destruction are a natural order in any species. Modern humans have invented the tools to destroy themselves. With dozens of countries now possessing nukes, it is just impossible that a nuclear war will never happen. And then the evolution will keep on marching relentlessly, and the survivors of the nuclear holocaust will again create intelligent species and so on and on.

(9,897 posts)I tend to veer a little darker in my outlook...we have the capacity through unmitigated climate change or nuclear war or accident to render large areas of the Earth uninhabitable for centuries...maybe evolution would start over again and eventually return to an intelligent life similar in brain size and dexterity to humanity...maybe an evolved cockroach instead of an evolved ape will inherit the planet in our absence?
What I wouldn't give for an actual time machine to see how things turn out 1,000 years from now...
