Every country has to have its 5th column, I guess.

(18,637 posts)I'll bet a lot of hard core Republicans today were lefty, anti-war, pot smoking free love hippies in the 60's.
In the 60's, some hippies were into selfish pleasures instead of true liberal values and they fought the government in order to keep their own selfish freedoms.
This selfish drive just evolved into conservative selfishness over the years.

(37,648 posts)Most under-30s are liberal.
It has been this way since forever. Therefore, the facts show that young people become more conservative as they grow older. They don't necessarily change from Dem. Party to Republican Party. They become more conservative than they were.

(24,396 posts)My MIL, FIL and BIL were all lifelong Rs until W came around, then they switched to being hardcore Ds.
My siblings are pretty much what they've been since they first voted, just more adamantly so, whether liberal or conservative.

(6,709 posts)and the past 40 years have made me a radical one. I longer I live, the more I see that's what is needed.
That said, I think people only become more conservative as they age to protect what they have. If they don't got nothin', they got nothin' to lose.
I predict the young today will become more liberal, not less.

(37,648 posts)I was shocked to find out my educated but ordinary grandmother, who watched Lawrence Welk religiously, and went to church every Sunday, had been a flapper. And a divorcee before she met my grandpa. And was seven years older than my grandpa. Grandma had clearly had wilder ways. I'm guessin' a little smokin', a little drinkin', a little whoopee'. And that's how she and grandpa ended up getting married.
By the time she was grandma, she was very conservative, little box hat on Sundays and all. Shocked at short hemlines and loose language.
My sister who was the wife of a rock band bassist, both of whom had lived a free and easy lifestyle, became staid parents who tore out the pages in their daughter's sex education book that showed pictures of you know what. Yes, they had changed. They went to church on Sundays, and were registered Republicans.
An old male friend of mine from the 60's & 70's, who went into the service for a while, then worked blue collar jobs when he got out...who smoked a little weed in his day, a nice and carefree "whatever, dude" kind a guy...now does posts on FB about the "invasion" at the border. Here's the real kicker: He's half Hispanic. His mother's family immigrated from Mexico. He's a Republican, now.

(33,643 posts)Those people are my parents generation now. My real dad was a hippy, still is. My mom and stepdad were Republicans in the 60's, 70's, and 80's ... now my mom is as liberal as I am, and my stepdad votes Dem, even though he doesn't much care about politics.
I know lots of people from their generation, and I don't know any of them that have switched from legit liberal/hippy types ... to full-blown Cons. I know more that have gone the other way, by far.

(7,504 posts)My sister and brother, BIL and SIL also hardcore. Their kids while somewhat more liberal, are still RW. I'm the hippie in the family.

(37,648 posts)Ah, youth.
I've seen it happen to a lot of the people I knew when I was late teens and early 20s. We did drugs, partied, drove fast (well, they did), hated war, didn't say bad things about gay people (like frat guys did), etc. They are now all Trumpers. I don't know them well, any more. But I know some of them on an acquaintance level. Every single one is a Trumper. One of my sisters whose husband was in a rock band, and they lived that life. They're Republicans, now. He still has long hair and plays weekends in his rock band.
I think I'm about the same. But most people become more conservative as they grow older.

(49,032 posts)For one thing, hippies were and are actually rare.
"pot smoking" and the other things do not a hippy make. Marching against the War and putting flowers in gun barrels do not a hippy make. People who truly advocated true free love in the '20s, '50s, and '60s were rare too and not all were "hippies".
In the '60s and '70s, "hippy" was used as a deep negative to attack people. Then it became a joke. Now it seems you have resurrected it as an attack on some people.
Perhaps you remember the '60s by not being there?
