Nixon had a long history as a redbaiter, so his opening diplomatic relations with communist China merely had the far right spitting nails and crying in their beer. For any Democrat, they would have joined right along with Nixon's supporters in screaming "commie commie commie!"
Same effect at play here. By being such foaming fanatics for so long and hammering opponents on specifically this point, they get lauded for simply acting in a sensible manner.
