Governor Edwin Edwards, as corrupt as they come (consistent with the history of Louisiana governors), was finally caught by using racketeering charges. He went to prison.

If you wanted to do business in Louisiana, you had to deal with Edwards. My grandpa, a civil engineer who did some work for the local parish and for the state, worked through Gov Edwards for the projects he got. My grandpa never talked about it. He wouldn't have gotten the work, if he hadn't gotten it from Edwards. Apparently the guv had his hands on everything, even down to the level of work at the parish level.
