Although you can bet our friends in the GOPee will trot it out non-stop should she be the nominee.

Still, as unpopular as Cheeto's becoming - and with the economy cooling almost as fast as the weather - 2020 should be an easy year for almost any Democratic nominee.

Sorry I don’t know who they are, but why would this be a bad thing? Parents having a tool to use to encourage their kids to go to school, if they weren’t going. Or thinking of not going.

IMO, only rich entitled people think it’s a cool thing to encourage kids not to go to school.

Defendant was an Latino mother and she was there because her daughter was truant. Daughter was around 14 and clearly angry at her mother. Judge was threatening jail if the kid did not go to school. The kid was like a big fuck you to the mother.... happy she was bringing shit to her mother.

Mom didn't know she could have the kid declared emancipated or home schooled.

I don't know how it worked out but I felt it was a miscarriage of justice to the mother. The same way Kamala's letter was a miscarriage of justice to the parents of San Francisco.

Others are struggling to do the right thing and should not be punished in such a way. There should be discretion and graduated steps involving school social workers, remedial classes, incentives to come to school, etc., but kids need to be in school.

And it is an indisputable fact that some parents are USELESS and allow students to stay home to wait on them, clean house, take of younger kids, or just won't make the kids go to school when the kid bitches about school because it is easier to let them just stay home than take control and make them go.

She describes what was in the letter, which she says was sent to every parent in the district. It did not threaten anyone, let alone perpetrate a "miscarriage of justice."

As she states in the video, the letter simply stated the well-documented correlation between school truancy and dropping out of high school and becoming a victim and/or perpetrator of crime. She is absolutely correct and what she did was laudatory. She may have even saved a kid's life.

I don’t see anything wrong with what she said. She laughed about her staff being worried about political fallout not about prosecuting parents who didn’t send their kids to school.

Sam Seder can sometimes be a jerk.

for children. An education means more opportunities for the child to have a better life. My take was that she wanted parents to know they needed to be responsible for making sure their children attended school.

In the video, Kamala Harris is NOT laughing about "threatening parents with jail for truancy." She made no such threat. She describes sending out a letter to EVERY parent in the school district simply stating the well-documented correlation between school truancy and dropping out of high school and becoming a victim and/or perpetrator of crime. She is absolutely correct and what she did was laudatory. She may have even saved a kid's life.

Her laugh at 8:04 is laughter at her staff about the fear her staff had over the potential political blowback they might face by taking on this issue with parents.

It's one thing to criticize a Dem candidate for something real. But making shit up just to bash them is totally fucked up and you should be ashamed of yourself. And that garishly color over-saturated picture of Harris to try to make her look evil (used for the video thumbnail) could have been pulled right off Daily Caller.

Seriously, WTF? Have you learned nothing from 2016 about who benefits when we bash Dem candidates?

36. would also help if people looked up the actual truancy policy

I've read it was a process involving several steps to identify families needing social services. A letter would be sent . If things don't improve, the issue would enter a mediation phase where the reasons for truancy are explored and those reasons addressed.

I have to ask Is it that progressives want to argue that truancy doesn't matter?

This Daily Kos article explores the this smear well and expresses well my shock at progressives dismissing truancy... ( I Know it's just an opinion piece but he raises great points) https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2019/1/29/1828522/-Kamala-and-Truancy-Anatomy-of-a-Smear I love his point about libertarian mischief in all this.

I Don't agree with court mandated appearances when it comes to this kind of thing but the willful distortion of someone's record is just 2016 redux- from people who either don't know how the legal system works or just general ignorance.

in a very liberal district. So does this mean that she will run as a progressive and then once she gets elected totally move to the middle? She would still be 100000000 times better than Trump but this is a little bit nerve racking. I would rather just play it safe with Elizabeth Warren who we all know is a solid progressive.
