My hero! She was responsible for my interest in politics and dedication to liberal philosophy. Loved her.

Barbara Jordan spoke at my graduation from The University of Texas at Austin. It was twenty-eight years ago, but I can still remember her voice and her intensity, and even some of what she said. A few months ago I was reading about her on-line, and I found the speech she gave to us. I remembered that she ended with a story that had a sort of moral at the end, and when I read the speech I could hear her passionate, ardent, and intense voice coming through. This is the story she told:

A woman preparing for a large party had pressed her yard-man into house-hold service. As they attacked the many tasks, she expressed second thoughts about the social event because of all the effort entailed. His response was weak in grammar, but the message was powerful: “Ain’t nothin’ worth nothin’, that ain’t no trouble.”
