Related: About this forumBlast From The Past: FYI, THIS Is What Trump Is About To Pull In Syria...
Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Since Trump spent the late 60s and early 70s in a drugged, orgy, he didn't notice what happened when Gerald Ford declared 'victory' in Vietnam, and pulled the U.S. Army out in 1975. North Vietnam overran South Vietnam, the US Army tried to evacuate as many collaborators as they could, in a panic, but most were abandoned to be persecuted and/or slaughtered. It was a political bloodbath that spawned the 'boat people' crisis. Thousands and thousands of refugees escaping Vietnam in small boats, many drowning in the process.
It took DECADES for anybody to trust the United States as a military ally again. It took decades before anybody stopped believing they'd train and equip you as an ally, and then leave you on the beach.
Well, FYI, Trump is about to do the same thing to the Kurds in Syria. The US trained and equipped them, and then got them to do our fighting for us in Syria, as well as parts of Iraq. And now, the US Army is about to bug out on them, leaving them to be slaughtered by either Turkey or Syria, or both.
Many of us were against being in Syria in the first place, but once you've made the decision to go it, you can't slither your way back out again. I don't blame Mattis for quitting in disgust. Think there's a Syrian refugee crisis now? Just wait for the Kurdish refugee crisis to begin.

God forgive this man.

(22,166 posts)despite the heroic actions of hundreds of thousands of our soldiers and 10,000s of deaths. A horrible war, that ironically, we have good relations w/ Vietnam today.
One other 'benefit' of this horrible war is that it tempered the need to readily go to war (for the most part) because of the too high cost of the Vietnam war.

(6,699 posts)I'm guessing we are most likely going to simply abandon them...and ISIS or the Syrian/Russian forces, along with Turkey, are going to systematically annihilate them. The same will be true for Afghanistan.
At least in Iraq, there was a relatively stable government to withdraw to. Here.....our allies are "the enemy".
Nice going, corporal bone spurs....you fucking coward and spoiled jackass.

We were propping up a failed and immensely unpopular dictatorship in Saigon. We were at the bitter end of our 20 year campaign to prevent the reunification of Vietnam.
Syria is not that at all.

(11,991 posts)I'm not really sure whether or not we should be in Syria.
But I have a high level confidence that, even if we should have gotten out, Trump did it wrong.
