PBS: 'The Eugenics Crusade' American Experience Now Airing
The 'Eugenics Crusade' tells the story of the unlikely- and largely unknown- campaign to breed a better American race, tracing the rise of the movement that began in England in the late 19th c. and grew in the US through the 20th c. The movement turned the fledgling science of heredity into a powerful instrument of social control. Early supporters of eugenics pseudoscience believed people inherited mental illness, criminal tendencies and even poverty, and that these conditions could be bred out of the gene pool. Eugenics encouraged people of so-called healthy, superior stock to reproduce and discouraged reproduction of the mentally challenged or anyone who fell outside the social norm. Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime adopted eugenics to try to create a superior Aryan race.
