(198 posts)worked for years on strip mines. It's a problem when you know where these sites are, it's a disaster to find all the ponds that aren't on a map (and are probably illegal) but exist regardless. I suspect my non Hodgkin lymphoma was caused by all the work I did around these sites. https://www.gofundme.com/y4d8hs Please donate.

(7,921 posts)which were flooded during the last 3 hurricanes. The overflowing ponds dumped raw sewage into the coastal rivers and thence to the ocean. There were massive fish kills not only in the rivers but the nearshore feeding grounds for both fish and birds. This is to say nothing of the effect on towns which draw drinking water from these rivers, nor the incredibly foul smell.
The Pork industry fought tooth and nail to void or alter state and federal regulation which would prevent ponds on this scale and the overflow problems I've mentioned.
Most people will be able to understand this.
