(2,850 posts)Just came home from a "Forest Unlimited" fundraising dinner to see this. Didn't know the East Coast had old growth. Too bad they didn't say more about the American Chestnut which was one quarter of this East Coast forest.

(28,944 posts)Have for years been interested in seeking out old growth forests. I look for them on maps and try to hike to them. Since I was up here in Massachusetts I did some internet searching to find where the old growth forests are. Mostly read articles but then stumbled upon this video which is quite comprehensive and well done. Seemed like something a lot of folks on DU would find interesting.

(8,401 posts). . . there is a stand of old growth forest in, of all places, the island of Manhattan in NYC! It's in Inwood Hill Park, which is at the northern end of the island.
