(3,425 posts)I believe that Tony Benn was formerly called Anthony Wedgwood Benn, and came from a very wealthy and privileged family. His father was a viscount and and I not sure if he inherited that title but if he did, he must have renounced it and changed his name to Tony Benn because of his strong distaste for Briton's class system. A great man and a great politician. John Bolton was toast the moment he started to debate him.

(15,229 posts)from Saddam Hussein were the political class. The general public who kept their heads below the parapet enjoyed something of a welfare-state, e.g. with a free national health service, superior to that of the US today, where one cancer victim can destroy the finances of a family and the life-savings of older folk. But you would know more about the truth on that subject than Me.
However, it does remind me of something Malcolm Muggeridge I believe, mentioned in his two volume biography, namely that Pandit Nehru had admitted to a British big-wig - it might have been Churchill - that when Britain invaded and colonised India, they were welcomed by the poor. I expect the women, too, since they put an end to suttee - though it's hardly a haven for women today. In the case of Iraq and Saddam, however, he had been protecting the mass of the people from the open-ended greed of our heroes of capitalism, while the US, UK and other allies all but destroyed the country, precisely because of it.
