History professor predicts Mueller will reveal Trump crimes that will ‘shock the nation’ — and force GOP to impeach

Historian Allan Lichtman is known for making accurate predictions — and he’s more certain than ever that President Donald Trump will be impeached this spring.

The American University history professor has correctly predicted the winner of every presidential election since 1984, including Trump, and he has recently updated his book, The Case for Impeachment, that was released in April — before the president fired FBI director James Comey and special counsel Robert Mueller was appointed.

“There’s as strong a case of obstruction of justice as there was against Bill Clinton on a vastly more important matter than a blue dress,” Lichtman told MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” “Remember, virtually every Republican voted for an obstruction article against Bill Clinton.”

He said the special counsel investigation almost certainly had more damning evidence of illegal cooperation between the Trump campaign and Russia, which he said would soon be revealed.

“It’s a conspiracy,” Lichtman said. “I believe we have the tip of the iceberg of what the special counsel knows about the relationship between Trump and the Trump team and the Russians. There’s a fair chance that the reason they were covering up all of those calls from then to be national security adviser with the Russians was to cover up a possible quid pro quo, the Russians will help us and in turn we’ll ease those sanctions. Why else make those calls and why else lie about them?”

The historian said the public had already seen strong evidence of obstruction, but he said there’s plenty of reason to predict charges on a “host of crimes” — some of them deadly serious — related to a Russian conspiracy.

...At this point they literally have evidence of any number of violations or crimes or obstruction or whatever else and they've done absolutely nothing but lick Trumps boots. The idea that anything that could possibly come out will all of a sudden be the thing that causes that 35% to turn on him and force the GOP to impeach is hysterical at this point.

That's why I hope that the people behind the scenes in the Democratic party spend less time playing "Gotcha!" and trying to come up with that magical thing that is going to take Trump down and focus more time and effort on getting Democrats elected and fostering a back bench.

There's simply no way the GOP is going to impeach Trump without a criminal indictment. Even if the Dems sweep congress this year you'd still need a wide majority in the Senate to remove him from office. So even in that scenario minus a criminal indictment of Trump there's little chance of him being removed from office. A criminal indictment would change everything. Even the GOPhers would have to vote for removal under that scenario as the political fallout from doing otherwise would almost certainly doom the entire GOP from top to bottom. It would never come to that anyway as Trump would simply resign and allow Pence to give him a pardon.

I think the best outcome is simply to leave Trump in office for the remainder of his term. The damage he's doing to the GOP is the gift that keeps on giving.

He's already done damage it will be extremely difficult to recover from, both in this country and abroad. We can't stand 3 more years of that.

With Trump gone we are left with Pence who I see as a much larger threat. Trump is all hat and no cattle, so while his rhetoric is toxic, he is largely ineffective. Pence will be seen as a more rational alternative even though in many ways his political ideology is even more destructive.

But now that Trump has the wreaking ball in place & using it with force against our institutions, even if they oust Trump, Pence/McConnell/Ryan will keep the ball going. These people loathe democracy & want a 21st century feudalism to take it's place. Things like health care, education & leisure time will be for the 1% only.

The Obamacare & Medicaid buildings have already taken massive hits. I'd like to smack the smugness off of all of their faces, fucking no-humanity assholes. (on edit: EPA & Education, too. And this graphic doesn't even go into the nightmare judiciary appointments. It will be decades digging out from this.)
